The two of you are halfway through dinner, and Lev is telling the story very dramatically.
"No, listen-" he says, holding one hand up like he's giving sworn testimony, "-you can't blame me for thinking you were flirting when you said, 'Is this seat taken?'"
You burst out laughing. "Lev, it was the last empty seat in the entire lecture hall."
He leans back with theatrical suspicion. "Mm-hmm. Sure. And you just happened to choose the seat next to me?"
"You were the only one not manspreading."
"That's a low blow," he says, fighting a smile.
You poke at your food. "You deserved it."
He opens his mouth to respond-right as his phone lights up and starts buzzing like it's trying to escape the table.
Lev groans. "Oh God. I should take this."
He answers and makes the fatal decision to hit speaker.
"LEV, you need to get down here NOW-"
"It's bad-REALLY BAD-"
"There's-wait-hold on-LUCA STOP DRINKING THAT-"
A crash. Someone swears. Someone else goes, "Is that his date? Hi, date!!"
Lev looks at you like the world is ending.
You're trying not to choke on your laughter. "Should we... check on the disaster squad?"
He rubs his forehead. "You really don't have to. They're basically toddlers with credit cards."
You shrug and smile. "They're your friends, something might actually be wrong."
He stares at you for a second, like he's genuinely touched by how cool you're being. Then he stands, tossing a few bills onto the table.
"Okay," he says softly. "But I owe you a real date after this."
The second you step inside, the place is a wall of bodies, music, and flashing lights. You look around, overwhelmed for a moment-
-until Lev's hand touches the small of your back.
"You okay?" he asks.
You nod, but before you can take a step, the crowd surges forward with a cheer from the other room.
Lev instantly catches your hand.
"Hold my hand," he murmurs. "Or I'll lose you."
You smirk. "Mm. Will you?"
He leans in, lips brushing your ear. "I wasn't planning on letting you go either way."
Your stomach flips-hard.
You let him weave you through the crowd, his thumb brushing your knuckles every couple steps like he can't stop reminding himself he's touching you.
You finally find his friends. Alive. Intact. Mostly sober.
"LEV!!" "Hey, look at him! He brought someone!" "Aww, look at him BLUSHING-"
One of them clapped him on the back. "Dude, we just wanted to tell you we won our match! You didn't have to sprint here like the world was ending!"
Lev froze.
"You said urgent!"
"Yeah! Urgent good news!"
He groaned into his hands as they all cheered and then turned to you.
"So you're the date?"
You shake your head, laughing. "Hi. I've heard... a lot about you guys."
"We're the normal ones," one declares. Seconds later he spills his drink.
One of them throws his arms up. "Oh my God, she's real!"
Another whistles. "Bro. She's hot. Well done."
"Don't scare her," Lev snaps, but he's blushing faintly.
Lev sighs and looks at you with an apology forming on his tongue.
"I swear they're not always like-"
"I think they are exactly like this," you tease. "And it's okay. Wait til you meet my friends ."
He looks relieved. Then guilty. "I'm sorry they dragged us here. Ruined the mood."
You step closer, tilting your head up at him. "Who says it's ruined?"
That catches him off guard.
Before he can ask what you mean, you lace your fingers through his again and pull him toward the dance floor.
His brows rise. "We're dancing?"
"We're absolutely dancing."
The lights catch his face as he follows you in, hands sliding naturally to your waist like that's where they always belonged.
The music swells. You sway closer. His breath catches.
"Okay," he murmurs, smiling against your hair, "maybe this is better than dinner."
"Mm-hmm," you say, leaning into him. "Told you the night wasn't over."
