You had no idea she was watching.
You and Aran had been joking around after practice, and on a whim, you gave him a quick hug to celebrate a play. It was innocent, playful-something you'd done a hundred times with him-but this time, someone had seen it.
His girlfriend.
At first, it was subtle. Whispers when Aran wasn't looking. Side-eyes whenever you passed her in the hall. Little comments: "Nice outfit for hugging other people," or "You really love getting attention, don't you?" You tried to ignore it. Tried to laugh it off. Aran always seemed oblivious when it happened, so you assumed it wasn't serious.
But today, it escalated.
She cornered you outside the gym while Aran was still inside grabbing his bag. Arms crossed, jaw tight, eyes sharp like daggers.
"You think you can just hug him like that?" she snapped, stepping closer. "Do you have any idea how that looks? Do you know how disrespectful it is?"
You held up your hands defensively. "I... it was just a hug. Nothing else. He's my -."
"He's your what?!" she spat, voice rising. "You're always around him! Laughing with him! Touching him! You're so obvious!"
"I'm not-" you began, but she wasn't listening. She leaned in, voice dripping with accusation. "You're trying to take him from me! I see it every time! I know your type!"
Your chest tightened. This was ridiculous-and mean. You opened your mouth to argue, to defend yourself, but before you could, a voice cut through the tension.
"She's my sister."
You looked up and saw Aran, tall and unyielding, standing between you and the storm that was his girlfriend. His eyes were cold, dangerous, and his hands rested lightly on your shoulders, holding you just a bit behind him as if to shield you.
"I said it once," he continued, voice low and firm, "and I'll say it again. She's my sister. You step one inch closer, you'll be dealing with me."
The color drained from her face. She'd expected him to be oblivious like always, maybe even intimidated by her. But this... this was different. His tone left no room for argument.
"She's-she's not... I-" she stammered, clearly struggling to maintain her composure.
"Leave," he said flatly. "Now."
Her shoulders slumped, and she muttered under her breath before storming off. You exhaled shakily, your body still tense from the confrontation.
Aran turned to you, eyes softening immediately. "You okay?"
You nodded, brushing a strand of hair from your face. "Yeah... thanks. I didn't want to make a scene, but... she just wouldn't stop."
He frowned slightly, tugging you gently by the hand to guide you away from the gym. "You don't have to put up with that. Not ever. Not from her. Not from anyone. Got it?"
"Got it," you said softly, your chest still racing, but a small smile tugged at your lips.
He paused outside the doors, glancing at you with a teasing smirk that didn't quite reach the warmth in his eyes. "You know, you really should stop making me look like a protective fool all the time."
You laughed, shaking your head. "I think it suits you."
He nudged you gently with his shoulder, eyes glinting. "Good. Because I'm not letting anyone treat you like that again. You hear me?"
"Loud and clear," you said, leaning slightly into him. "Thanks, bro."
And as you walked home together, the tension melted completely. You realized that whatever came next-with her, with anyone-you had Aran's unwavering protection.
