The beach house was already loud when you arrived.
Music spilled out of open windows, laughter tangled with the crash of waves outside, and someone had already lost a flip-flop on the porch. You barely made it three steps inside before spotting the one person guaranteed to ruin your night.
Kuroo Tetsurō.
Leaning against the kitchen counter. Smug. Relaxed. Annoyingly attractive.
You stopped.
He noticed you immediately.
A slow grin spread across his face. "Wow. They really let anyone in here."
You scoffed. "Funny. I was thinking the same about stray cats."
"Still bitter I see."
"Still insufferable."
Kenma sighed from the couch. "It's been thirty seconds."
The first drinking game started before you could escape.
Everyone crowded into the living room, bottles and cups scattered across the table. You ended up directly across from Kuroo, legs crossed, arms folded, daring him to say something stupid.
He didn't disappoint.
"So," he said lazily, "you still hate fun?"
"You still confuse arrogance for personality?"
Bokuto gasped dramatically. "ARE YOU TWO FLIRTING?"
"No," you said.
"Yes," Kuroo said.
You kicked his foot.
He laughed.
The game continued. Every time you had to drink, he smirked. Every time he lost, you clapped.
At one point, he leaned over to grab a card and muttered, "Careful. You're gonna fall in love with me if you keep staring."
You rolled your eyes. "In your dreams."
"Already happened there."
By the third game, your buzz had settled warm in your chest, your patience worn thin.
That's when she appeared.
Pretty. Confident. Very interested in the tall volleyball player everyone already adored.
She slid into the seat beside Kuroo like she belonged there.
You noticed immediately.
"So you play professionally?" she asked, touching his arm.
Kuroo nodded politely. "Yeah."
"That's so hot."
You turned your head away.
He caught it.
Smiled.
Didn't move.
You stood up abruptly. "Getting another drink."
The kitchen was cooler, quieter. You poured something stronger than necessary, trying to ignore the tight feeling in your chest.
Then you heard her voice again, drifting in from the living room.
"So are you single?"
Your grip tightened on the cup.
Kuroo hesitated. "...It's complicated."
You walked back in just as she laughed.
"Well, I don't mind complicated."
That did it.
