It was supposed to be a simple afternoon.

Just you, your friend, some streamers, and the gym you'd been asked to help decorate for tomorrow's event.

And okay - Matsukawa being there for "extra practice" was unexpected... and mildly annoying. He was your brother's sworn rival for reasons neither of them ever explained. Which meant you were supposed to dislike him out of loyalty.

But you didn't.

Not even close.

Especially not when he glanced up at you from the court and smirked, tilting his head like he knew every thought running through yours.

"Didn't know your brother let you roam the gym unsupervised," he teased.

You stuck your tongue out at him and climbed the ladder to hang lights.

He chuckled-low, warm, dangerous. It was stupid how your stomach flipped.

Your mutual friend ran off to grab more supplies, leaving you two in the mostly empty gym.

And then-

CLICK.

The lights went out.

Both of you froze.

"...Did the school just forget to pay the electricity bill?" you whispered.

Before he could answer, the gym doors slammed, locked, and your friend's voice shouted from the hallway:

"WELL! Since you two are STUCK, might as well play seven minutes in heaven!"

Your jaw hit the floor.

Matsukawa made a strangled noise.

"YOU ARE SO DEAD," you huffed toward the door.

"Not before your brother kills me," he muttered.

You didn't even get a chance to panic before Matsukawa's hand wrapped around your wrist, pulling you gently toward the only place with even a hint of privacy:

The supply closet.

He opened the door, guided you inside, and the two of you were immediately swallowed by darkness-surrounded by the smell of old volleyballs, sweat, and Matsukawa's cologne.

He cleared his throat.

"...Well," he said softly, voice stupidly calm, "there's literally nowhere else to stand, so... sorry in advance."

You stepped back, but the space was tiny-your back hit the shelves, and he towered over you, warmth radiating off him like a furnace.

Your heart pounded.

His breath brushed your cheek.

"Relax," he murmured. "I'm not gonna jump you."

You exhaled-

"Unless," he added lazily, "you want me to."

You choked. "I- what- NO-!"

He laughed quietly. Like you were cute. Like he enjoyed every flustered second.

His hand lifted, brushing dust from your shoulder, and the touch burned.

"You always get this worked up around me?" he asked, leaning in just enough to make your pulse spike.

You glared up at him. "Maybe if you stopped being- being- you-!"

"Wow," he whispered, breath warm against your lips, "devastating insult."

You were about to snap back when the air shifted.

He'd stepped closer.

Close enough your foreheads almost touched.

Close enough to feel the way his chest rose and fell.

Close enough that the banter evaporated, replaced with something heavy and electric.

"Hey," he murmured softly, eyes flicking to your mouth. "This really bothers you?"

Your breath caught.

You shook your head. "No."

His voice dropped lower.

"Good."

And then-

He kissed you.

Slow at first, testing the waters, his hand sliding to your waist, pulling you into him with a control that made your thoughts scatter.

You grabbed the front of his hoodie without thinking.

He groaned against your mouth-deep, surprised-like he'd been holding back for way too long.

The kiss turned heated, his lips moving against yours with a slow hunger that had your knees wobbling. He pressed you gently into the shelving, one arm bracing beside your head, the other anchoring your hip.

You were breathless when he finally pulled back, forehead resting on yours.

"...Your brother is going to murder me," he whispered.

You laughed, dizzy. "We just won't tell him."

He huffed a soft, pleased sound. "Now that," he murmured, "is a plan I can get behind."

CLICK.

The gym lights flickered back on.

Footsteps rushed toward the closet.

You both jumped apart, frantically straightening clothes and wiping lips.

The door swung open-your friend grinning stupidly.

"Well? Anything happen-?"

"Nope!" you blurted, shoving past them.

"Absolutely nothing," Matsukawa said smoothly behind you, but when you glanced back...

He was smirking.

And you knew this wasn't the last time he'd corner you.

Not even close.
