Your friend swore it wouldn't be a big party - "Just a small get-together," she said.
She lied.
The living room was packed with half the volleyball team, loud music vibrating the floors, bodies dancing, drinks being handed around. You weren't exactly uncomfortable, but you weren't in your usual element either. Still, it helped that Kuroo was here.
You weren't close, not really, but you'd hung out enough times - dragged along by your mutual friend - that you knew his personality well. Teasing, confident, always smirking like he knew something you didn't. Tonight, though, he wasn't quite so cocky.
He noticed you the second you walked in. Not in a dramatic way, no. His eyes just lingered. A little too long. The dress you wore wasn't even that revealing, but it fit you perfectly, and Kuroo's gaze had dipped - once, twice - before he forced himself to look away.
He kept drifting toward your side of the room. Offering to refill your drink. Asking if you wanted snacks. Telling stupid jokes. Pretending to be casual, but his eyes kept finding you like it was a reflex he couldn't control.
At some point, someone shouted:
"Seven minutes in heaven!"
Groans. Laughs. You tried to back out, but your friend - the traitor - shoved you onto the floor with the rest.
Kuroo was sitting right across from you, long legs stretched out, hair even messier than usual from the humid room. He raised a brow when he caught you already looking at him. You looked away instantly.
He smirked quietly to himself.
The bottle spun. Slowed. Wobbled. Then stopped.
Pointing right at Kuroo.
And the other end?
Pointing at you.
"OOOH-" "Of course it's them-" "Kuroo, try not to corrupt her-"
He rolled his eyes at his teammates, but when his attention returned to you, the teasing smile softened. Less playful, more curious. Careful.
"You good with this?" he asked quietly, leaning close enough that you felt the warmth of him.
You nodded - maybe too fast.
Your friend shoved you toward the hallway closet before you could overthink.
The door shut. The noise of the party muffled. Darkness. Close air. And Kuroo, standing inches from you, one hand braced beside your head like he needed something to hold on to.
He laughed under his breath. "Didn't think the bottle would betray me that fast."
"You don't have to pretend you're disappointed," you shot back.
His eyes flicked to yours - and the joking faded, replaced with something thicker, warmer.
"Oh, I'm not disappointed," he murmured. "Just trying not to scare you off."
Your heart thudded. "You're not scary."
"You think so?" His voice dropped lower, the small space making it vibrate in your stomach. "You've been avoiding eye contact with me all night."
"I was not-"
"You were." He stepped a little closer. "And it was cute."
Your breath caught. Tension wound between you like a tight string. He wasn't touching you - not yet - but his presence pressed against you, all heat and height and quiet restraint.
