You weren't supposed to be here tonight.

Oikawa told you practice ran late at Aoba Johsai. You believed him - why wouldn't you?

Then your friend sent you a picture.

A girl. At his apartment. His hoodie on her.

Your heart hit the floor so hard you couldn't breathe.

You don't even remember the walk there. Just the way your knuckles hit the door before your brain caught up.

Inside, you hear voices.

A girl. And Oikawa.

Arguing.

"You said you weren't going to tell her!" the girl snaps.

"I wasn't- I'm trying to fix it- just let me fix it!"

Your blood runs cold.

He cheated.

On you.

On the relationship you put your whole heart into.

The door swings open when you try the handle.

The girl freezes. Oikawa freezes. The whole room freezes.

He looks like he's been crying - eyes red, voice strained. He swallows hard.

"Y/N..." Your name is broken, desperate.

Your hands shake violently.

"I didn't want you to-" he tries.

You hold up a trembling hand.

"Don't. Please don't."

The girl rolls her eyes like you're the one being dramatic. "Relax, okay? It wasn't even that serious."

You flinch like she slapped you.

Oikawa snaps.

"Get out."

"Oikawa-"

"JUST GO."

She storms past you, brushing your shoulder like you're in her way.

Then it's just you and him.

He takes a step toward you.

You take one back.

His face crumples.

"Y/N... I swear I wasn't- it's not what it looked like- it got complicated, I wasn't thinking straight- just let me explain-"

He's choking on his words. You're choking on your heartbeat.

"How long?" you whisper.

The question hits him like a punch.

He squeezes his eyes shut, breath shaking.

"Tw- two weeks," he forces out.

It's like something inside you rips open.

You press a hand over your mouth to hold in the sob-

But it still tears out of you.

Oikawa breaks.

He steps forward, voice cracking:

"I'm so sorry- I messed everything up- I didn't want to tell you yet, I didn't want to ruin it-"

You shake your head, trembling.

"I loved you," you whisper. "I trusted you."

"I know," he chokes. "That's why I'm begging- please, don't leave- please just let me tell you the truth-"

You turn toward the door, vision spinning.

He grabs your wrist - gentle, terrified.

"Y/N... please."

You pull away like it burns.

"I can't do this," you whisper.

"Wait- just- please let me say it- I swear it isn't cheating- it was never that-"

You turn around, tears pooling, voice cracking:

"You should've thought about that before you touched her."

He looks like you stabbed him.

Then-

He slams his hands against his hair and shakes his head, frantic.

"Y/N, she's not- I didn't- I never touched her like that!"

You stare, breath shaking.

"Then what?" you whisper.

He finally breaks.

"She's my cousin."

The world stops.

"What?"

He swallows, chest heaving. "She came to me two weeks ago because she's leaving her boyfriend. He- he hit her. She didn't want her family knowing. She begged me not to tell anyone, especially you, because she knew you'd tell someone and she was scared it would get back to him."

Your stomach drops.

"But... the picture- the hoodie-"

"She spilled coffee all over herself," Oikawa says weakly. "I gave her mine."

You blink. Once. Twice. Your brain trying to reorder an entire reality.

"And the argument?"

"I told her I had to tell you," he whispers. "I didn't want secrets between us anymore. She got angry. She thought you'd think I was cheating. She was right."

You feel suddenly, unbearably small.

"You said two weeks," you whisper.

He nods, shoulders shaking.

"She came to me two weeks ago. That's when it started. Not- not anything romantic. And the reason I cried wasn't because she was here. It was because I knew you'd see that picture and think the worst. I knew I should've told you sooner."

Your chest hurts in a whole new way.

A softer way.

A guilt-heavy way.

"I'm sorry," he whispers. "I should've told you everything. I should've trusted you. I should've protected you from this."

Your voice cracks.

"Tōru... I thought you-"

"I know," he says immediately. "I know. And I'll spend as long as it takes proving I'd never choose anyone over you."

Silence.

Heavy. Real. Painful. Hopeful.

You take a step toward him.

He doesn't move. Doesn't breathe. He just waits.

"Tōru..." you whisper again.

He finally breaks into a sob and pulls you into his chest - not touching you unless you pull him back.

When you do, he melts.

"I'm sorry," he whispers into your hair. "I'm so, so sorry."

And for the first time tonight...

You believe him.
