c/f - childhood friend

You learn very quickly that being close to Akaashi means being invisible in a very specific way.

Not ignored - just overlooked.

It happens in small moments. Group hangouts where someone says, "Oh, Keiji, didn't you and c/f grow up together?" and his childhood friend smiles like it's a title she's been waiting to wear again. When people tease him about how well she knows him - his routines, his habits, the way he takes his coffee - as if familiarity automatically equals destiny.

You don't interrupt. You never do. You and Akaashi have been dating for a while now, you just don't know how to blurt it out. No one knew you two hang out without the group, getting closer to where that line of friendship and something more blurred.

You sit beside him on the couch, your knee barely brushing his, and listen as stories from his past get told without you in them. He doesn't correct anyone. Not because he agrees - but because Akaashi doesn't like unnecessary friction. He lets assumptions exist until they hurt someone.

And tonight, they finally do.

It's a small gathering at Bokuto's place - loud, crowded, warm. Too many people in one room, music playing just a little too high. You'd arrived with Akaashi, stayed glued to his side for most of the night, but somewhere between drinks and laughter, you drifted toward the kitchen to help wash cups.

When you come back, you find her sitting where you'd been.

His childhood friend.

She's leaned in close, laughing softly at something he said. Her hand rests on his arm - casual, practiced, familiar. The kind of touch that tells a story before anyone asks questions.

Bokuto notices first.

"Ooooh," he grins, far too loudly. "Look at you two! Just like old times, huh?"

You stop short.

Akaashi stiffens.

"Bokuto-"

"Seriously," someone else adds, smiling knowingly. "Everyone thought you two would be together by now."

The words hang there, heavy and careless.

You wait. You don't know what you're waiting for - a correction, maybe. A glance at you. Something.

His childhood friend laughs, brushing her hair behind her ear. "People always say that," she says lightly, but there's something hopeful underneath. Something expectant.

You step back without realizing it.

Akaashi notices immediately.

He looks at you - really looks - and something shifts in his expression. The softness fades, replaced by clarity. Resolve.

"No," he says.

It's quiet, but firm enough that the room stills.

"That's not true."

Everyone turns to him.

He stands, gently but deliberately removing her hand from his arm. He doesn't look at her when he continues - his eyes stay on you.

"I care about her," he says, voice steady. "She's been important to me for a long time. But people don't 'end up together' just because they share history."

Silence.

Your heart is pounding so loudly you're sure it's audible.

Akaashi steps toward you, crossing the space you didn't realize you'd created. When he reaches you, he doesn't grab your hand or pull you in dramatically. He simply stands beside you - close enough that your shoulders touch.

"And this," he adds, softer now, "is who I choose. We've been dating a while now, she never wanted to say anything and I see why. All y'all do is talk about me and c/f's childhood, but none of y'all talk about us now. We don't have many stories now, all we have are those of the past. This is my girlfriend." Akaashi said grabbing your hand, making your breath get caught up in your throat but when you looked at him. He was smiling at you. "Whom I'm making new stories with, who I want by my side as I tell em, got it?"

Every breath leaves your lungs at once.

The room erupts into awkward coughs, muttered apologies, Bokuto loudly declaring he's going to get snacks because wow tension. His childhood friend doesn't say anything. She just nods once, tight-lipped, and excuses herself.

You don't follow.

Neither does Akaashi.

Later, when the party settles into something quieter, you find yourselves on the balcony, city lights glowing below. The cool air presses against your skin, grounding.

"I'm sorry," he says after a moment. "I should've shut that down sooner."

You shake your head. "You didn't do anything wrong."

He frowns slightly. "I let you feel like an option."

The honesty of it makes your chest ache.

"I know how it looks," you admit. "She knows you better than anyone. She's been there longer."

Akaashi turns to you fully now. His expression is gentle, but unwavering.

"She knows my past," he says. "You know me."

You swallow.

"She remembers who I was. You see who I'm becoming." His hand hesitates before lightly brushing yours, as if asking permission even now. "That matters more."

You let your fingers lace with his.

"I was scared," you confess quietly. "That one day you'd realize everyone was right. That she made more sense."

Akaashi squeezes your hand, just once.

"I don't choose what makes sense," he says. "I choose what feels right."

He leans his forehead against yours, not rushing, not claiming - just present.

"You were never invisible to me, there is no other girl, not when you exist," he murmurs.

And for the first time all night, you breathe easily.

Because he didn't choose you loudly. He chose you clearly.

And with Akaashi Keiji, that means everything.
