You're both in the gym after school. Your voices bounce off the walls.
"Why do you always have to nitpick every single thing I say?" you snap.
Tsukishima scoffs. "Why do you always set yourself up for it? If you didn't say stupid things, I wouldn't have to respond."
"Oh my god, you're insufferable."
"Likewise."
Your voices echo. You're both already irritated from a long day, and it shows.
You step forward. "Say one more thing, Tsukishima."
He raises a brow, lazy and provoking. "Thing."
You could strangle him.
But before you can fire back, someone else enters the gym.
Your blood goes cold.
Your ex.
The one who used to smile in public and sneer in private. The one who grabbed too hard, shouted too close, twisted everything into being your fault.
The one you left.
"Oh," he says, smirking when he sees you. "There you are."
Tsukishima's expression shifts instantly-tiny, sharp, noticing the way your hands shake.
You swallow. "I'm busy. Leave."
Rino laughs. "Still bratty, huh? I just wanna talk."
His footsteps echo as he approaches. Too confident. Too familiar.
Tsukishima steps subtly in front of you. "She said leave."
Rino ignores him, eyes locked on you. "You really think you can walk away from me? After everything you put me through?"
Your throat tightens. Tsukishima glances back at you and something clicks-something protective, instinctive, angry.
But the guy grabs your wrist before Kei can move.
"Come on, don't make a scene-"
"Don't touch her."
Tsukishima's voice is low. Deadly. Not loud - which somehow makes it scarier.
Rino scoffs. "This is cute. Your new guard dog?"
Tsukishima takes a step forward, calm in a way that feels like a threat. "You're going to take your hand off her. Now."
Rino's grip tightens. "Or wh-"
Tsukishima's hand snaps around Rino's wrist, wrenching it away from you in one clean, unhesitating motion.
Rino yelps. Tsukishima doesn't flinch.
"She said leave," Kei repeats, voice dropping even lower. "That means you don't touch. You don't talk. You get out."
Rino scoffs. "Since when's she your problem?"
Tsukishima steps forward, tall and cold and absolutely done. "Since right now."
The tension spikes. Then he tries to shove him back.
Tsukishima barely moves.
For a moment, they stand there- Kei, tall and cold and furious, Rino, suddenly realizing he's not the one in control anymore.
"Run along," Tsukishima says, bored. "Before I stop being polite."
Rino spits a curse but backs away, muttering threats as he leaves the gym entirely.
The doors slam shut.
Then silence.
Your breath comes out shaky. You rub your wrist, still stinging.
Tsukishima turns to you, jaw tight. "What the hell was that?"
You choke out a laugh. "My ex."
"I gathered that," he says sharply. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Why would I?" you snap back, anger bubbling-not at him, but everything. "You and I argue enough. You would've used it to mock me."
Tsukishima's voice drops, quiet and firm. "I would never use that against you."
Your eyes sting.
Silence fills the gym.
You stare at Tsukishima. "Why did you do that?" You asked changing the subject.
He doesn't look at you. "He was being annoying."
"That's your reason?"
He pushes his glasses up, annoyed. "What do you want me to say? That I wasn't about to watch some idiot grab you? That I-" He cuts himself off, jaw flexing. "Forget it."
You step closer. "No. Say it."
His eyes flick to yours. Something shifts - something hot, frustrated, real.
"You piss me off," he mutters. "Constantly. But seeing someone else put their hands on you made me want to break something."
Your breath catches. "Tsukishima..."
He exhales sharply, like he hates this. "I don't know why I care. I'm not supposed to. We're not supposed to-"
You grab his shirt. It shocks him silent.
Maybe it shocks you, too.
"You care," you whisper. "That's why."
His hands find your waist before he even thinks about it, pulling you in, irritation and adrenaline and something else crashing together.
"Shut up," he mutters.
And then he kisses you - hard, angry, hungry - like every argument was leading right here.
You kiss him back just as fiercely.
Enemies? Maybe. But right now?
You're something else entirely.
