The call came at 02:17.
Yujin hadn’t slept. He was still sitting on the edge of his bunk, boots unlaced, mind heavy with everything he refused to feel—until his phone vibrated against the metal frame beside him.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Almost.
“Ahn Yujin speaking.”
There was static. Then a rushed voice. “Captain Ahn? This is Sergeant Lee from logistics. Miss Jang—she was involved in a vehicle accident near the east checkpoint.”
The world didn’t slow down.
It stopped.
“What?” His voice wasn’t loud. It was worse—flat. Hollow.
“The transport jeep lost control during the rain. It clipped a barrier. She’s conscious, but they’re bringing her to the base infirmary now. You’re listed as emergency contact under unit protocol—”
The rest blurred.
He was already moving.
Boots on. Door slammed open. The hallway lights flickered as he ran past them, ignoring the confused stares of half-awake soldiers. Rain lashed against the open yard, soaking his shirt within seconds as he sprinted toward the medical wing.
His chest tightened with every step.
You wanted her safe.
You pushed her away.
And she still got hurt.
By the time he reached the infirmary doors, they were just wheeling her in.
Her hair was damp, strands clinging to her pale cheeks. A thin line of blood trailed from her temple down to her jaw. Her right wrist was strapped to a temporary brace, and there was mud along the hem of her uniform.
“Wonyoung—”
He didn’t remember crossing the distance. He was just suddenly there.
Her eyes fluttered open at the sound of his voice.
And for a split second—
They softened.
“Yujin…?” she whispered, like she wasn’t sure if he was real.
The medic glanced between them. “She hit her head lightly. Possible mild concussion. Wrist might be sprained. We’re running scans now. She’s lucky.”
Lucky.
The word felt like a blade.
He stepped beside the gurney as they pushed her into the examination room. His hands hovered uselessly at his sides. He wanted to touch her. To wipe the blood from her face. To hold her.
But he remembered his own voice.
We should stay away from each other.
He swallowed hard.
She winced slightly as they adjusted her arm.
Instinct overrode pride.
His hand shot forward, fingers wrapping gently around her uninjured one.
And then he froze.
Because he didn’t know if he was allowed to.
Her fingers were cold.
Fragile.
He hesitated.
For one heartbeat.
Two.
