The days after the ranking change settled into a strange rhythm.
Haneul Royal Academy moved on quickly. It always did.
New gossip replaced old headlines. New competitions filled the notice boards. Students who once whispered about the ranking shift now argued over upcoming academy selections like nothing had ever changed.
Ahn Yujin stayed the same.
If anything, he became quieter.
More efficient.
Less involved.
He still arrived early.
Still left late.
Still sat at the top of every class with the same calm posture, pen moving across pages like nothing in the world could interrupt him.
When teachers congratulated him for “maintaining excellence despite temporary standings,” he only nodded once.
No correction.
No reaction.
Just acknowledgment.
And that was the end of it.
Wonyoung noticed.
Not because she was looking for him.
But because she wasn’t.
He didn’t approach her.
Didn’t look at her longer than necessary.
Didn’t respond when their names were mentioned together in group discussions.
It was as if the shift in rankings had drawn a clean line between them.
A line he had no interest in crossing.
In class, they sat on opposite sides now.
When the teacher assigned group work, Yujin simply accepted whichever group he was placed in without complaint.
Even when Wonyoung’s name was on the same list, he didn’t react.
No pause.
No hesitation.
Just a brief glance at the assignment before continuing as if she were no different from anyone else.
“Yujin, you’re paired with Wonyoung for this project,” the teacher announced one afternoon.
The room briefly went quiet.
Eyes shifted.
Waiting.
Wonyoung didn’t look at him.
Yujin flipped the page of his notebook.
“Understood,” he said simply.
That was it.
No tension.
No acknowledgment beyond the requirement.
The teacher seemed satisfied and moved on.
The silence that followed felt heavier for everyone else than it did for him.
After class, students naturally dispersed.
Wonyoung packed her things calmly, slower than usual, but still composed.
When she stood, she finally glanced toward his direction.
Yujin was already leaving.
Bag over one shoulder.
Steps steady.
He didn’t stop.
Didn’t turn.
Didn’t even glance back when she closed her notebook.
