The apartment was wrapped in comfortable silence, broken only by the distant hum of cars outside and the soft ticking of the clock hanging above the living room. It was nearly ten at night, the time when most people were preparing for bed.
For An Yujin, however, the night was only beginning.
His bedroom floor was neatly occupied by his running gear. A lightweight black running shirt, compression shorts beneath a pair of dark grey running shorts, his favourite marathon shoes, a smartwatch charging beside his phone, and a waist pouch containing energy gels and a small bottle of water.
Yujin stretched both arms above his head before rolling his shoulders with practiced ease.
He had always been an active person.
If he wasn't running, he was cycling.
If he wasn't cycling, he was hiking.
If he wasn't outdoors, he was probably inside a gym challenging himself to beat yesterday's record.
His wife often joked that if he stayed still for longer than fifteen minutes, she would check whether he was sick.
Tonight was no different.
A local twenty-kilometre midnight marathon had been organised across the city, and Yujin had registered months ago.
Not because he wanted to prove anything.
He simply loved running.
It gave him peace.
After tying his shoelaces tightly, he stood up and adjusted the sleeves of his sports shirt before slipping on his glasses.
Satisfied with his appearance, he glanced toward the bathroom where the warm yellow light was still glowing.
He smiled.
His wife was definitely inside.
Quietly, he walked over and leaned against the bathroom doorway.
Jang Wonyoung stood in front of the mirror with a fluffy white headband holding back her hair. Her oversized cream-coloured sleep shirt almost reached her knees, and she was completely focused on gently patting moisturiser onto her cheeks.
Several skincare bottles were lined up perfectly on the sink.
She looked so serious that Yujin couldn't help smiling.
"You've been staring for almost a minute."
Without even turning around, she caught him immediately.
Yujin laughed softly.
"You always know."
"I can see your reflection."
He walked inside without another word.
The bathroom smelled faintly of lavender and fresh cotton.
Wonyoung reached for another bottle before suddenly feeling two familiar arms wrap around her waist from behind.
She smiled almost instantly.
Yujin rested his chin lightly on her shoulder.
Neither of them spoke.
He simply held her comfortably, enjoying the warmth after preparing to spend the next few hours running beneath the cool night sky.
His embrace was firm but gentle.
Wonyoung naturally leaned back against his chest.
"You smell like your body wash," she whispered.
"You smell expensive."
