The morning haze hadn’t even cleared the city when Yujin’s phone buzzed again. He glanced at the screen and froze. A message, no caller ID, no traceable number—just a short video clip.

The footage was grainy, filmed from a distance, but unmistakable: Wonyoung, inside her room at the safe house, being observed. The camera zoomed in on her hand resting on the blanket—on the ring Yujin had placed there. Then the voice came, cold and metallic over the distorted recording:

"Detective Ahn. We know where she is. You can hide her, lock her away, whatever you think will save her… but she is ours. Keep her out of our reach again, and it won’t just be you losing someone you care about. Do you understand? This is your only warning."

The video ended abruptly, leaving the feed black. Yujin’s jaw tightened, knuckles whitening on the phone. He could feel the chill of the syndicate’s presence crawling along his spine, the same sense of inevitability that had haunted him since he was twelve.

He slammed the phone onto the console of his unmarked vehicle. Rain streaked the windshield, blurring the city lights. Every instinct screamed at him—run, hide, fortify—but he knew better. This wasn’t just a warning. It was a provocation. And syndicate provocations were dangerous, deadly.

He flicked his gaze toward the rearview mirror, imagining her sleeping peacefully in the safe house. The image sharpened his resolve. They think they can scare me into letting her go. They don’t know me. They don’t know what I’ve lost… or what I can do.

Yujin activated his comm, voice low but urgent. “Field teams, listen carefully. The syndicate just sent a warning. They know where she is. I don’t care what it takes—they don’t get her. Do you copy?”

Static crackled, then the team responded in unison: Copy that, sir. We’re on it.

Meanwhile, at the safe house, Wonyoung sat by the window, staring at the gray sky, the small ring on her finger catching the faint light. She felt uneasy, though she didn’t know why. A part of her felt watched, like the shadows themselves carried eyes.

“Something’s wrong,” she murmured to herself. Her fingers brushed over the ring again. They… they won’t leave me alone, will they?

Yujin’s voice broke through the comm in her mind like a lifeline, even though she couldn’t hear it. She imagined his words—rough, protective, unwavering: I won’t let anyone touch you. Not today. Not ever.

But doubts still gnawed at her. Am I safe just because he says so? Or am I just a pawn in something bigger? She looked down at the ring again, the small metal circle a tether to someone she didn’t even fully know, someone who had claimed her without her consent yet had risked everything to protect her.

Outside, Yujin’s SUV roared to life, tires cutting through rain-slicked streets. He was on the move, calculating every potential route the syndicate might take, every rooftop they could occupy, every shadow where a sniper could hide. The warning had just escalated everything.

And deep down, he knew this was only the beginning.

They’re testing me. His jaw tightened. They think they can break me by threatening her. They don’t know that she’s already mine. That she always will be. And I’ll make sure no one, no matter how dangerous, ever touches her again.

The storm outside mirrored the storm inside him—a surge of fear, rage, and an unspoken, obsessive devotion. Yujin pressed the accelerator, the SUV cutting through the city like a predator on the hunt.

The syndicate had drawn a line. Yujin was ready to obliterate anyone who dared cross it. And somewhere, Wonyoung, oblivious to the exact danger closing in, was tethered to him in ways neither of them could fully comprehend yet.
