The Grand Hall of the Alexander Palace gleamed beneath a sea of crystal light.
Golden candle flames shimmered endlessly through towering chandeliers, their reflections scattered across polished marble floors and immense mirrors framed in imperial gilt. Winter roses and evergreen garlands adorned the white columns of the hall, while beyond the frost-laced windows the snowfall over Saint Petersburg continued steadily, wrapping the palace grounds in silver silence.
The wedding reception had settled into the stately rhythm expected of the imperial court.
An orchestra performed from the upper gallery, violins rising elegantly through the warmth of conversation and soft laughter. Noble families from across the empire filled the ballroom in rich velvets, silk gowns, jeweled orders, and military uniforms heavy with gold braid. Servants passed soundlessly among them carrying crystal goblets of champagne and silver trays layered with delicate pastries, caviar, sugared almonds, and carved fruits glazed like jewels beneath the candlelight.
At the center of the gathering stood Olive beside Alexei.
The timidness that so often characterized her still lingered softly within her manner, yet tonight it was tempered by unmistakable grace. Her silver bridal gown shimmered delicately beneath the chandeliers, and the Romanov pearls Alexandra had gifted her rested against her pale throat. Fine lace veiled her copper-red hair, which glowed warmly beneath the golden light.
Every eye in the ballroom followed her now with reverence.
Not merely as a bride.
But as a Romanov.
"You have endured the evening admirably," Olga said quietly as she approached her sister-in-law.
Olga's expression carried its usual gentleness, softened further by genuine affection.
Olive offered a modest smile. "I confess I had not anticipated so many formal introductions."
"Nor do I believe half of Saint Petersburg anticipated them either," Tatiana remarked as she joined them. "Yet here they remain."
There was dry amusement beneath her composed tone.
Nearby, Maria spoke warmly with several young duchesses while Anastasia sat perched beside one of the dessert tables speaking animatedly with a cluster of officers who appeared simultaneously entertained and alarmed by her.
At the far end of the hall, Nicholas and Alexandra received dignitaries beneath the imperial crest. Though the Tsar maintained his formal composure, there was unmistakable satisfaction in his expression whenever his gaze rested upon Alexei and Olive together.
The evening possessed all the grandeur expected of a royal marriage.
Yet for Olive, there remained moments where the sheer scale of it threatened to overwhelm her.
The endless etiquette.
The endless attention.
The awareness that every movement she made was observed.
She had only just accepted another courteous bow from an elderly countess when movement near the entrance drew her attention.
Immediately, warmth brightened her face.
Emma had arrived alongside several members of Miss Peregrine's household.
Unlike many of the aristocratic guests, they entered without theatrical display or excessive ceremony. They had visited the palace before — enough that the guards no longer regarded them with suspicion, though several servants still looked faintly unsettled by Millard's invisible presence.
Emma inclined her head elegantly as she approached.
"Your Imperial Highness."
The title carried the faintest trace of teasing familiarity beneath its proper formality.
