Wedding Night

The palace had grown silent at last.

Hours earlier, the Alexander Palace had blazed with music, candlelight, and the endless murmur of nobility gathered beneath imperial splendor. Now the corridors rested in near stillness, interrupted only by the distant crackle of dying hearth fires and the muted footsteps of servants retiring for the night.

Beyond the tall palace windows, snow drifted slowly across Saint Petersburg beneath a pale winter moon.

Olive walked quietly beside Alexei through the dim corridor, her gloved hands folded carefully before her. Exhaustion lingered delicately in every movement she made. The long wedding day — the ceremony, the reception, the endless formalities — seemed to weigh gently upon her now that the excitement had faded.

Yet beneath her weariness remained something else.

Nervousness.

Not cold fear, but something softer and far more intimate.

At the end of the corridor, two imperial guards standing before a pair of gilded doors bowed deeply.

"Your Imperial Highnesses."

Alexei acknowledged them with a quiet nod before opening the doors for Olive.

She stepped inside slowly.

Warm firelight immediately greeted her.

The room glowed softly beneath the amber flicker of candles arranged carefully throughout the chambers. Heavy velvet curtains framed the windows overlooking the snow-covered palace grounds, while white roses and evergreen branches adorned polished tables and marble surfaces — remnants of the celebrations prepared earlier by attentive servants.

Everything felt hushed.
Private.
Sacred.

Olive paused instinctively near the doorway.

Though she had spent countless evenings within these rooms before their marriage — reading beside the fire, speaking quietly with Alexei long after supper, escaping the suffocating grandeur of court life — tonight the chambers felt entirely transformed.

Tonight they belonged to them both.

Her gaze drifted slowly toward the bed prepared near the hearth.

The embroidered silk coverlets had been turned down for the evening, candlelight warming the pale gold fabric. A single vase of winter roses rested upon the bedside table beside a silver carafe of water.

The sight alone sent warmth rising instantly into her cheeks.

Behind her, the doors closed softly.

The sound seemed impossibly loud within the stillness.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Alexei removed his white ceremonial gloves slowly, setting them aside upon a nearby table. Without the brilliance of the ballroom surrounding him, he looked younger somehow — the severe formality of the imperial heir softened by exhaustion and candlelight.

Olive glanced toward him carefully.

He noticed at once.

"You are anxious," he said gently.

She lowered her eyes. "A little."

His expression softened immediately.

Crossing the room, he stopped before her with deliberate care, as though afraid any sudden movement might unsettle her further.

"We have spent nearly every day together for months," he murmured.

"I know."

"And yet this evening appears to have frightened you entirely."
