Jeno knew you were mad if you hadn't spoken a single word to him for nearly an hour. By the time he showed up at your place, he was already aware that he had royally screwed up. He truly didn't mean to forget yesterday was your two-year anniversary. After practice, Chenle had dragged him and Jaemin out to try a malatang restaurant. Losing track of time didn't change the fact that he had left you completely alone.

"(Y/n), will you please just look at me?" he pleaded, turning his head to the opposite end of the couch where you sat.

Without even sparing a glance in his direction, the book in your hands remained open. This heavy tension had been hanging in the air since you reluctantly answered the door and silently handed him a box wrapped in brown paper after he came inside.

He had slowly opened it to find a high-quality leather midnight blue wallet. On the inside was his name engraved in cursive, accompanied by a printed picture of your first date in the plastic sleeve. Realizing how much thought and care you put into this gift felt like a punch in the gut.

Now he was left to pick up the fragments of your heart on the ground. But you weren't letting him. So Jeno decided he had to resort to last measures. He was certain it would work on you.

"Baby..." he murmured, letting his eyes grow bigger.

Hearing his voice jump a few octaves caused your fingers to freeze on a page. Jeno took a deep breath to hold himself together before proceeding with his plan.

He rose from the sofa to crouch in front of your knees. Once you were at eye level, he let out an audible "hmph."

Crinkling his nose, he let out a whine with the most pitiful frown he could muster. "Jeno is so thad! He's so thad that his baby is mad at him."

You bit your lip, trying not to make eye contact with your boyfriend. It was quickly becoming impossible with those puppy dog eyes.

"Jeno is really sowwy that he hurt (Y/n)'s feelings," he continued to sulk. "Jeno really is an idiot, isn't he?"

He cautiously rested his chin on your knee, watching the coldness in your gaze begin to dim. Figuring one more attempt couldn't hurt, he tilted his gaze upward through a fringe of lashes.

Surely enough, you cried out in frustration and slammed your book shut. "Oh my gosh! How can you pull the aegyo card on me?!"

For a second, Jeno thought maybe this hadn't worked and you were going to blow up at him. But then you stood to wrap your arms around him, nearly stealing the air from his lungs.

"It's not fair!" you huffed, cupping his cheeks. "You're too adorable."

He laughed as you pulled back with a look that mirrored his poutiness. Without wasting another second, he embraced your waist to squeeze back. He gently brought you to sit in his lap.

Lowering his head, he absently rubbed the back of your hand. "I really am sorry, baby. It's no excuse, but I really didn't mean to forget our anniversary."

All of Jeno's exploding cuteness had succeeded in temporarily erasing why you were upset with him in the first place. Still, you couldn't easily shake off how hurt you felt beforehand.

"I know Jen. You just lost track of time," you muttered, lifting a hand to stroke his hair.

Your understanding only made his heart sink in guilt. But he wasn't going to let that linger for long. He held you closer and tucked your head under his chin. After a few minutes of cuddling silently, he cleared his throat.

"You know, two years isn't nothing to me. I got you a present too, the date just slipped my mind," he confessed quietly.

You arched a brow when he reached into his jacket pocket. A gasp escaped your throat before you could even process the small velvet box he pulled out. Jeno opened it, revealing a white gold band with a round glimmering diamond at the center.

"(Y/n), you are everything to me," he breathed, holding your hand firmly this time. "And you deserve so much more than a fool like me who leaves the love of his life alone on such an important day."

Tears filled his eyes, instantly making yours well up in reaction to this rare show of vulnerability from him.

He chuckled nervously, trying to keep a steady voice. "But when I think of you, (Y/N), I see forever. And I want us to be forever because you're the only person I've ever loved so strongly."

The "forever" thing made tears stream down your cheeks. His hand was shaking as he took the ring out to place on your finger. You've never seen him this visibly nervous before.

"Marry me, (Y/n)?" He finally asked, meeting your gaze.

Too overcome with emotion, all you could do was nod and lean upward to kiss him. Jeno brought his other hand to rest on your nape, kissing you back passionately. He made sure every ounce of his heartfelt speech was pressed against your lips.

While Jeno couldn't guarantee that you'd never get mad because of his stupidity again, he could promise a future of showing just how much you meant to him.
