Chapter Twenty-Four: The Mark

Dacey's POV:

I sat on the ground staring at the floor. I did not make a sound nor did I move. I couldn't move. I felt like I was paralyzed by fear. By loss. I had no hope what so ever. I felt like a chick from some reality tv show when their boyfriend had just broken up with them and thrown them practically in the trash.

"What are you doing?" I heard a small female voice ask. I lifted my head from the ground and saw the small brunette in black leather. She looked at me and then at the body. She lifted her eyebrows and then looked at me.

"Why is there a dead body on the floor?" That was the next thing she asked. I then sighed and answered her questions.

"I am moping. And that guy is dead." I pointed to the man I had killed earlier. Kat looked down at me and then at the body.

"What happened to the guy?" She was a curious little thing. I got up off of the floor and looked at her. She went to poke the body and then I quickly stopped her. I grabbed her arm before she could touch the body.

"Don't touch the body unless you want to arrested for suspicion of murder," I instructed her. She nodded her head and I let go of her arm. She glanced at the bullet wound and cocked her head to the side.

"Well, he has been shot. And by the looks of it, it was a quick death." She told me. I raised my own eyebrows at this and then glanced at the body. I stared at the life-ending wound and then nodded my head. I knew that it was quick but Kat didn't. How did she know?

"How'd you know?" I questioned her. She then lowered her body into a crouching position and looked over at the body. She waved her hand over the wound but did not touch it.

"The bullet went directly into the guy's heart. A perfect shot if you ask me. Someone must have had a grudge against this guy to shoot him straight into his life organ." She told me. I nodded my head. She was a smart girl.

"Kat, how do you know all of this? I mean come on a no one apart from people who work in this area are that good at analyzing a body." I pointed out. She smiled and then nodded her head. She shrugged her shoulders shortly after that and stared at the man.

"I have lived on these streets long enough to see bodies. My mom taught me all about this kinda stuff. She was nice." She told me. I nodded my head and the turned my full attention towards her.

"What happened to her?" There was always a story every since I had first met Selina in my Mother's office and then with the kid snatchers, I knew she was smart and I knew that she was homeless and living on the streets but she never talked about her mother to me. I knew how important an adult role model had to be and that is exactly what Kat needed. But I knew that it could never be me. I was too damaged.

"She well... I know that she disappeared and that's really all I know. I haven't seen her since but I know she is out there..." Kat rubbed the back of her head and a gave her a sad smile.

"I'm sorry." I apologized and she nodded her head. Her short curly locks stuck out of her hat and I studied her face a few tears fell down her cheeks. I didn't mention this to her as I was no better at hiding my emotions and she was only a kid.

"It's okay... Wait, what about you? You didn't tell me why you were down here?" She asked me. I then stopped. In froze mentally and I didn't know what to say to her. I couldn't really say that I had just killed this guy. I would be weird and probably freak her out so I better lie like I always do.

"I was walking back to my apartment when I noticed the body on the floor," I informed her. She nodded her head and then looked back at me.

"What ya going to do with him?" She questioned. I looked at the man's dead cold eyes and then sighed. I brought out my mobile and started to type in the GCPD's number.

"Call for backup and then take the body to the morgue to get an autopsy done. Then find the killer." I told her. She then smirked and looked up at me. She saw something in my eyes and I wiped them. Probably tears.

"But that doesn't explain why you was on the floor." Curiosity killed the Kat. I then shrugged my own shoulders and came up with another lie.

"Works been really stressing me out and my mother has gone off to god knows where and I am stuck now with a killer on my hands," I explained. Kat was about to answer when I heard the thunder of footsteps.

"STOP HIM!" A familiar voice called. Then I saw a figure speed past the alleyway. I placed my hand on my holster and then ran quickly saying by to Kat. I ran down in my heels and followed the figure who was running ahead.

I figured that if I didn't act fast we would never catch the person so I did the only thing I could think of. I pulled the trigger... Again. The bullet flew and within seconds it hit the person's leg and they went tumbling to the floor.

"Son of a bitch!" A pained voice cursed. I stopped running and jogged up to the man and then pulled down his hood.

"Strikes!" I stopped and turned my head. James was running towards me and then he looked at the figure in pain. He noticed the gun in my hand and nodded his head.

"Gordon." I addressed him. He then grabbed the man and pulled him up by his arm. The man jerked about and stopped when he looked at me. He had just stopped. He stared at me and I was starting to feel uncomfortable.

"Who's this guy?" I asked James. He placed the handcuffs tightly onto the man and then looked back at me.

"His name is Cole and this guy here is heading straight for Arkham," James informed me. I nodded my head and then studied Cole with his silver eyes staring directly at my green.

"Why is he going in?" I questioned scanning Cole. He had black jeans and a leather jacket. Just like someone, I used to call a friend. He had silver eyes and white hair. But he would not stop staring at me. I felt like a piece of meat and not in a good way.

"First-degree murder.  Found out he was in relation to the other murders. He carries the same weapon." I gulped slightly. This guy did look fishy to me but I knew he didn't kill all of those people. I kind of helped him. Not that James needed to know or Cole. I nodded my head and that was when I noticed a black mark on his collar bone.

"James, his collar bone has what looks like to be-" I stopped in realization when James finished my sentence.

"A mockingbird." That was when light bulbs flashed off in my head. He must be to do with the murders of all of the business men. I looked at him and then back at James.

"You don't think he's in relation to the murders do you?" I asked referring to the mockingbird murders. James shrugged his shoulders.

"I don't know, but I will find out." I nodded my head. I wanted to join James I needed to find Brendan's killers and I knew that they were part of this group. I was going to avenge him and then go after Cobblepot.

"Oh, by the way, there is a dead body down the alleyway a little up the road," I mentioned.

"You might want to check it out." And then suggested. James sighed and nodded his head.

"I'll get Bullock to have a look," James told me. I gave him a quick nod and walked with him to the car, with Cole in chains. I will find out who murdered you, Brendan... I promise.

Unknown POV:

I watched as Cole was being taken away by Gordon and my little princess. She looked so strong but she was angered and that made me pissed. Penguin had made her upset and devastated. I may not have liked my little girl's mother but I would have never have done that. But he played his part well. He just didn't know that sending Dacey further away from him would bring her closer to me.

I will show myself soon my little flower and when I do... You will never want another man ever again. And I won't let anyone ever hurt you...
