I waved to Amanda as I ran up my drive way. I called her to come and pick me up from Louis'. Without her I'm pretty sure mine and Louis' relationship would be outed by now. I took a deep breath before I walked up the steps. Who knows what is waiting for me behind that door? I opened the door slowly not really knowing what to expect. Lately my mother has tried to be all buddy buddy with me which was unusual. There has been numerous nights when I didn't tell her where I was and haven't came back until morning. That was not one of those days.

"Where have you been?" I heard a voice say from in behind the dark shadows the house created in the living room. I flicked on the light to see my mom sitting on the couch.

"Friends house," I said closing the door and kicking off my shoes. That's all she deserved to know.

"Really? Without an over night bag?" she asked.

"It was unplanned," I answered.

"At who's house?"

"Why do you care?" I asked almost laughing.

"I'm your mother I want to know."

"Amanda's house, if you really want to know." She stood up and walked over towards me. She placed her hands on her hips trying to look motherly. Trying but not succeeding.

"Have you been drinking Jess? You look like shit." I can't believe that just came out of her mouth. All hope she had of restoring her motherhood just went down the drain.

"Thanks Mom. You should totally tell your teenage daughter that. Great way to lower her self confidence."

"Have. You. Been. Drinking?" she accented every word.

"So what if I have? Wait a minute I have an idea. What if I wasn't actually with Amanda also," I said adding attitude. I basically confessed everything right there in that sentence.

"Jess. I want you to tell me where you were," she said. She started to get angry. Good, that's what I wanted. I just wanted a tiny sliver of proof that she might actually care for me.

"I already did."

"Stop with the games Jess!" she yelled.

"You know what?! If you were a good mother you would know where I was! Because you would have called Amanda's house and asked her Mom! If you were really concerned you would have called me more than 5 times! And you didn't call until this morning! So what did you do mom?! Look in my bed and realize I wasn't there?! Your teenage son called more times than you!"

"Because I was busy with work!"

"So what, works more important then your own child?!"

"Jess," I heard a deep voice from behind me say. I turned around to see Todd standing there. "Go to your room," he demanded. I stared at him.

"Really Todd-"

"Drop it. And go to your room," he said sternly. Why I actually listened I don't know why. But I figured he was probably saving me from something. I stomped off to my room, giving my mom one last glare before I did.

I plopped myself down onto my burying my face in my pillow. It muffled my screams. What makes her think that she can just come back into my life after years of being absent? And what made her come to this realization now?

I heard a knocking at my door.

"I don't want to talk to you, go away," I said. Harsh but necessary.

"It's me, Todd." I could probably force myself to deal with him.

"Fine." The door opened and he entered my room, closing the door behind him. "If you are here to yell at me too, than I don't want to hear it."
