CHAPTER 9

I wait outside Mr. Whiteside's office for ages but in reality it is in fact half an hour. The receptionist from this morning is giving me death stares over her desk. Finally, Mr. Whiteside comes in and asks her 'has she been behaving?'

'I don't think she's capable of that.' I scoff loudly and they both turn to look at me as if I was eavesdropping on their conversation. Their conversation was pretty loud, my ears just picked up on it.

'Kiera, come in,' Mr. Whiteside states as he opens the door to his office for me. I'm guessing, he had to wait until everyone finished and collect all the exam papers. Not to mention looking at them, I know just by looking at him that he had a sneak peek at mine. Invasion of privacy if you ask me but I guess no one is asking me. 'Kiera, I asked you a question.' His voice snaps me out of my thoughts as I turn to look at him.

'What did you ask me?'

'I asked you why you aren't in your uniform today.'

'I already told you, I was rushing.'

'Do you think I was born yesterday Kiera?'

'I don't understand, you couldn't have been born yesterday because then you'd be only one day old.'

'Kiera, you can cut the act out.'

'Sir, I honestly don't know what you're talking about, I'm not acting, where did you get that idea?'

'I've seen your exam paper and you're not as stupid as you make out to be.' I knew it, what a nosy Parker?

'Sir, I don't understand, you're not a qualified examiner, and you can't check my work.'

'Kiera, I haven't marked it, only examiners can do that but I can check it and I know you're not this stupid.'

'Sir, you're insulting me.' I say as I fake being hurt. He sighs, I know I’m making this difficult but there'll be questions and I can't be bothered with them now.

'Kiera go and wait outside, you leave me no option but to call your parents.'

'Can I go and join my classmates while my parents arrive Sir?' I ask politely avoiding his gaze.

'Fine,' he replies and I rush out of the room.

I know everyone will be outside, they're always outside after an exam so I head off outside. It's a nice weather today, not too hot and not too cold. People are playing, some are sat down on the benches, talking and laughing. But the ones that stand out are Lucy and Lily. They're both sat down on the fields with a little distance in between them. Lucy has her arms around her knees protectively with her face hidden in them and Lily just looks at her. I walk over to them and say 'hey.' They both turn their heads back to look at me and don't bother replying. 'Wow, talk about rude.' I mutter to myself but judging by the looks they give me, they heard. 'How did you guys find the exam?' I ask, trying to start a conversation.

'It was all right, I think,' Lily replies.

'You think?'

'Yes, Kiera, I think.'

'Okay okay, no need for that tone.' I mutter again. Lucy doesn't even talk, she just stays quiet and I sit beside her but I hurt my stomach in the process and a quiet 'ow,' escapes from my lips. Lucy looks up at me and asks 'What? Is it your stomach?' I don't say anything.

'What about your stomach Kiera?' Asks Lily curiously. We obviously forgot she was here. Lucy just goes back to her previous position and Lily eyes me curiously. 'What about your stomach?'
