CHAPTER 31

'What dress shall I wear?' I ask Katie, while holding two dresses. One is black and long and the other is a short, tight blue one. She turns around and looks at them, analysing their features. 'Definitely the blue one. They bring out the blueness in your eyes and it compliments your figure.'

'Blue it is then,' I mutter. I go into the bathroom to change and when I get back Katie is already dressed. She's wearing a red dress that's shorter than mine. Her make up is done and her long blonde curls are hanging loose over her shoulders. She looks completely different to what I'm used to. 'Wow, you look awesome.'

'You don't look to bad yourself. Now, let me do your make up and your hair.' She gently pushes me and sits me down in front of my dressing table. She straightens my hair, before moving on to my makeup and before I know it we're both ready. 'All done.'

'Thanks.'

'No problem,' but I totally understand if you decide not to go-'

'It's fine and besides I need a little distraction. I can't stay depressed for ever can I?' She just smiles and nods her head.

'We better get a move on,' she mutters and we walk out the door. I get confused when I see her walking to a black BMW.

'Katie, what are you doing?'

'What does it look like?'

'It looks like your hijacking someone's car.' She scoffs and says 'That someone happens to be me, now shut up and get in.'

'Wait... What? Since when?'

'I got my license a while ago, after all I am seventeen, unlike some people,' she smirks as she rubs the fact that I'm not seventeen yet in my face.

 'Shut up.'

'Lucy has a similar one, did you know that?'

'Yes, I did, just didn't know you owned one too.'

'Well, now you do, so come on!' I roll my eyes and move into the passenger seat.

The car ride is really short and before I know it, we're outside James' house. 'James is hosting the party?'

'Yep,' she says as she confirms my suspicions. We get out of the car and walk into James' house.

Music is blasting from the house, attracting attention towards it. As we walk inside, I notice that people are already drunk. 'You guys made it!' James' voice snaps me out of my thoughts.

'Yep, we sure did.' Katie replies and he hands us two drinks. Katie begins drinking hers and I say 'Katie, you're driving.' She shrugs her shoulders and carries on. Why do I bother?  I just walk off into the kitchen, intending to swap my drink for water.

I pour my drink down the sink before refilling it with water. 'Hey Kiera!' I roll my eyes at the sound of Liz's voice.

 'What do you want?'

'I just wanted to apologi-'

'Just stop apologising. I don't want your sympathy; in fact I don't even want anything from you.'

'Okay,' she says softly, while nodding her head. 'So are you enjoying the party?' I don't attempt to answer her question and she gets the hint and leaves, leaving me alone in the kitchen. After a few minutes of silence, Joe, Max, Tom, Chris and James come into the kitchen, screaming their heads off. They notice me and immediately become quiet.

 'What?'

'We're very sorry for your loss.' It takes me a minute to realise what they're talking about. I should be grateful but for some reason, I'm feeling angry. Angry at that the fact that the news of my mum passing away is being passed around from person to person. As I've been saying recently, I stubbornly say 'I don't want your sympathy,' before walking out of the room. I don't know who told them but that is what I want to desperately find out. It's probably Lucy, seen as she's close with all of them.

I walk into one of the living rooms and see Lucy and Liz sitting on one of the sofas. Lucy's wearing a black maxi dress and has her hair all over the place but it suits her. I walk up to them ignoring Liz's presence and say 'Lucy, I need to talk to you.'

'Can't it wait?' She asks while she sighs.

'No, it can't.' I reply and she sighs. She looks at Liz and asks 'do you mind?'

'Why are you even asking her?' I ask dramatically and she immediately replies with 'shut up Kiera!' I roll my eyes and scoff.

'No, I don't mind, I'll just meet you back here when you're finished?'

'Sounds good,' Lucy smiles at Liz before following me out of the living room. I go outside, into the back garden and sit on the bench and she sits opposite me. 'So, you wanted to talk to me?' She coldly asks.

'Did you tell the boys that my mother is dead?'

'What? Why would I even do that?'

'I don't know, maybe because you're very close to them.'

'So you thought I'd tell them something like that? For the record, I didn't tell the boys about it but it's nice to know what you think of me.'

'Fine, I'm sorry.' She shakes her head and stands up to leave. 'Sit down!'

'Why? So you can assume some more?'

'Why are you even acting like this? If this was Liz, you'd forget about it in an instance.'

'Well, Liz isn't moving in with her alcoholic father, is she?' I don't even react to what she said and she heads inside. It takes me five minutes to go inside and look for her. I remember that she was meeting Liz in the living room, so I walk in to the living room to see Lucy's head on Liz's shoulder. Before I can even speak Liz says 'Lucy has a headache, so you should just talk to her tomorrow.'

'And what are you? Her personal assistant?'

'She might be, do you have a problem with that?' Lucy sits up and asks.

'I need to freaking talk to you!'

'Oh so what were we doing before? Wasn't that talking?' I sigh because she's making this difficult.

'You know what I mean.'

'Actually, I don't think I do.'

'You're being totally nasty to me about something that's way beyond my control.' She runs a hand through her hair and says 'go and tell someone who cares.' Liz rubs Lucy's back, trying to comfort her. 'I still don't understand why you're so mad at me.'

'Well, Kiera, I really would explain it to you...But you know, you're brain would explode.' My face becomes hot as I hold back my anger. My eyes are burning, as they’re fighting back all the tears that wanted to come out. I know that if I blink, the tears will fall. I want to scream but I don’t make a sound. Instead, I walk away.
