CHAPTER 47
I ring the doorbell and she answers instantly. 'Hey,' she says but then she realises I’ve been crying as her expression falls and quickly asks 'Kiera what's wrong?'
'Everything.' I mutter and she motions for me to come in.
'My parents aren't in, so we have the place to ourselves.' I fold my arms, looking unimpressed and she says 'Kiera let's go to my room.' I follow her up the stairs and in to her room.
She sits on her sofa and I join her. 'So, are you going to tell me what's wrong then? And don't say "everything" this time.' I sigh before taking a deep breath and tell her about Doctor Jonathan calling me and giving me the letter I have in my hands.
'What does it say?'
'A lot of things.'
'That's not really helping though is it?' I just give her the letter and say 'You might as well read it.' She looks at me before reading the letter.
After a few minutes, she gasps and I’m guessing she's got to the part where she's mentioned. She finishes the letter but doesn't say anything. 'Is it true?'
'No,' she says shakily.
'Lucy, don't lie to me.'
'Fine, it is true. Is that what you wanted to hear?'
'Of course it isn't.'
'Now that you have the truth, you can go.' All it takes is for me to say 'Stop pushing me away,' before she finally breaks down in my arms. 'Why didn't you tell me?'
'We were seven, what was I supposed to say?' She mumbles.
'Do your parents know?'
'If they did, do you think your dad would be walking around like a free man? The only people that knew were your parents and now you.'
After a while of silence, Lucy stands up and says 'you can just ask how it happened, I know you're wondering.'
'Do you feel comfortable talking about it?'
'I'll never feel comfortable talking about it but if you want me to tell you then I will.'
'Okay.' I nod.
She sits on her bed and I’m assuming she wants some distance, so I don't follow her. I look at her and wait for her to start speaking. 'My mum dropped me off at your house but you were asleep on the sofa so I said I’d be in your room and I’d wait until you woke up. I was sitting on your bed and your dad came in.' Tears flow down her cheeks but she just wipes them away and carries on. 'He sat next to me and just stroked my hair, talking to me about fairies. I thought he was just giving me attention because I was an attention seeker but then it happened.' I take a deep breath and ask 'how did my mum know?'
'I'm getting to that,' she says. She takes a deep breath, 'she walked in half way through and walked back out.'
'What? Didn't she even do anything?'
'No, I remember saying "help me" and then she started crying and walked out.' I can’t help the tears that fall from my eyes. 'Afterwards, I ran down the stairs and out of the house.'
'I remember that, I just woke up and I said "stay" I don’t know if you hear-'
'I heard but I just couldn't.'
'So you ran but what did you say to yout parents?'
'I said I had a terrible headache.'
'And when you came to school the next day, you just ignored me and then came the name calling.'
