CHAPTER 46

I'm in the kitchen making myself a drink, when my phone vibrates in my back pocket. I don't bother checking the caller ID and just answer it by saying 'hello.'

'Hello, Kiera?'

'Yes, it's Kiera.'

'It's Doctor Jonathan; can you come by the hospital soon?'

'What? Why?'

'We'll discuss it later when you get there.'

'Okay.' I say, with confusion written all over my face. I end the call and quickly get dressed. I go downstairs and Liz asks 'where are you going?'

'Out.' I respond briefly.

'And do you have permission?'

'Shut up Liz!'

'I'll take that as a no then,' she mutters under her breath but I hear her.

'Tell them I've gone to the library to pick up some books.' She raises her eyebrows at me and I sigh, 'I’d do the same for you!'

'When will you back?' I check the time, which is currently 12:15.

'I don't know,' I say shrugging my shoulders.

'I'll text you if things get bad,' she says and I nod, making my way to the hospital.

Ten minutes later, I walk inside the hospital and walk to reception and ask for Doctor Jonathan. The receptionist calls him and he appears.

'Follow me,' he says and I have no choice but to follow him through the familiar halls. He walks in to his office and says 'take a seat.' I oblige but ask 'what am I doing here?'

'How are you coping with everything?'

'I've been coping fine but I know that you didn't call me here just to ask me that, so you might as well spit it out.' He sighs and says 'yes, that's not why I called you in here.' I get comfortable in my seat and he continues. 'When your mother was dying, she wrote you a letter. She made you two copies.'

'Why did she make two copies?'

'Because she knew your father wouldn't give it to you.'

'If it's a letter about her apologising then I’ve seen it already and I’ve had a wasted journey.'

'No, this is a different one, longer than the one you're talking about. I'm guessing your father hasn't given it to you?' I shake my head, confirming his suspicions. 'Okay, I'll just get it for you.' He walks out of the room for a little while and my right leg begins shaking uncontrollably. 'Here it is,' he says as he walks back into the room. 'It's your mother's dying wish,' he informs me as he hands it to me. I look at it for while before taking it. 'If you need anything-'

'It's fine.' I state cutting him off and he nods his head. I get up to leave and he says 'bye.'

'Bye,' I repeat, trying to be polite. I walk away from the hospital and walk to my favourite childhood park.

I take a seat on one of the benches and look at the letter in my hand. It says my name on it in my mother's handwriting. Immediately, tears swell up in my eyes. My hands begin shaking, 'get a grip' I mumble to myself. I take a deep breath before opening it.

To my dearest Kiera.

You reading this letter means that I'm gone and for that, I’m so sorry.
