CHAPTER 4

 I knock on Mr. Whiteside’s office door. 'Come in' he loudly states. I enter his office and close the door. I awkwardly sit down and play around with my fingers. 'Kiera, Mrs. Donnegan has informed me of what happened and I’d like you to tell me your side of the story.'

'Story? I don't get it, what story? I don't remember a story being in told in Biology Sir.'

'No, Kiera, I’ll just rephrase that, I want you to tell me what happened, can you do that?' He asks as if I am stupid or something. Well everyone already thinks I am stupid so I would not be surprised if he did.

'Yes,' I say as I nod my head. 'We were dissecting a heart and Mrs. Donnegan put me in a group with Lily and Lucy-'

'Aah, you three are best friends aren't you? Even when you were all in primary school.'

'That was primary and this is sixth form Sir.'

'Yes, I’m aware of that Kiera, carry on.'

'Where was I Sir?'

'Erm…' He thinks hard before continuing, 'you were in a group with Lily and Lucy.'

'Oh yes and Mrs. Donnegan told us to dissect a heart but I don't even know what it means. Anyway, everyone was slashing their knife into the heart and tearing it into tiny pieces. I do not know but I asked Mrs. Donnegan what the point of it was as we are in sixth form. She got angry and defensive and said that my opinion did not matter. She gave me a dirty look while saying it Sir. What did she mean by it?'

'Erm, she didn't mention that to me Kiera.'

'Oh, did I imagine it Sir?' He gives me a sympathetic look and just then, the woman herself (Mrs. Donnegan) comes in.

Mr. Whiteside tells me to leave the room and he would come and find me at the end of the school day, so I go. However, I wait until he closes the door and stay behind to hear what is being said.

'Mrs. Donnegan are you sure? Kiera never ever disturbs a class; she's not capable of that.' I hear Mr. Whiteside say to Mrs. Donnegan.

'Why isn't she capable of that?' She asks coldly.

'Well, because, she is... You know.' I know. Stupid. I am stupid; just say it for crying out loud.

'No, Mr. Whiteside, I don't.'

'Because she's not intelligent and she doesn't even know what dissecting means so how would she know about a complex topic such as animal rights. Impossible.' Wow, that was cowardly of him.

'I'm telling you, I’m just as surprised as you.'

'Well then let's keep a close eye on her.' I try to shift into a more comfortable position but the door opens and it is too late to act as if I was doing something other than eavesdropping. Therefore, I give up and turn my head to look at whoever just walked in. It is Mr. Mason.

'Kiera, what on Earth are you doing?'

'Nothing Sir, I have to go.' I run off without even waiting for a reply.

As it is lunchtime, everyone will be outside so I decide to look for Lily. She always spends her spare time on the benches near the fields so she will probably be there.

I see Lily but she is sitting with Lucy and they are sitting opposite each other. They look like they are having a serious conversation and Lucy is deep in thought. I go up to them and say 'hey.' Immediately, they both rise up from their seats and look at me.

'Look what the cat dragged in.' I give Lucy a dirty look but quickly remove it with an innocent one and ask 'cat? What cat? I don't see any cats and I dragged myself here, well my legs did.' She looks at me as if I am out of this world, I get that a lot.

'Erm, it's a saying, not a literal saying.'

'Oh really?'

'Err yes duh'

'So who says it?'

'What?' Again, she looks at me as if I am out of this world. Lily just looks in between us and listens.

'You said it is a saying, so who says it?' Lily smirks and Lucy's facial expression is priceless. Lucy looks at Lily and says 'I’ll leave you to do the honours,’ as she starts walking away.

'Wait, you're going?' Lily asks with a shocked expression displayed on her face.

'Yep.'

'What about our conversation?'

'Lily, we'll continue it another time, I’ll see you later.' After looking back and forth from Lily to Lucy, I am confused.

'Come on, I am sure lunch is over.' Lily states so I just follow her.

We enter the Psychology classroom and take a seat at the back. Lucy, Joe and some other students are currently in the classroom but the teacher is running a little late. 'Sorry, I’m late class' says Mr. Budgen (our first psychology teacher), who is late as usual.

'It's okay Budgen, just don't make a habit of it,' says Joe, making everyone laugh. Mr. Budgen gives him a death stare.

'Has everyone done the work I set?' No one dares to answer him so I decide to break the silence.

'Sir you can't set homework, you can only set timers and things.'

'Are you serious?' Mr. Budgen asks and Lily just shakes her head.

'Why? Was I meant to be joking?' I ask raising my eyebrows as I look at Mr. Budgen.

'Shut up Kiera!' commands Lucy

'Why should I? Are you going to make me?'

'Because it's people like you that give blondes a bad name and don't tempt me.' Oh yeah, I forgot she is blonde. So is Lily.

'Okay class settle down! Seen as none of you have done your homework, I guess I’ll have to set more homework.'

'Oh Sir, I have so much homework, I may have to drop out of school to finish it!' Says Joe. Again, making the class laugh.

'Be quiet Joe!'

~~~~~~~~~~
The rest of the lesson goes by very quickly and before I know it, we are out of there. 'Kiera, a word?'
'Yes, Mr. Whiteside?'
'I need to have a chat with you, come into my office.' I leave Lily and follow Mr. Whiteside to his office.
'You need to try in your exams you know.'
What?' I ask.
'Your exams. I’m worried that you'll fail them.'
'If I was going to fail them, why did you let me to take my A Levels?'
'Honestly Kiera, I didn't know it was this bad. The first biology exam is in a few days and I want to ask you, how will you do?' I do not know what to say so I just repeat myself and ask 'what?'
'Let me rephrase that. How well do you think you're going to do in the exam?'
'I'll probably get a U, an E at the highest.'
'Well, you've got to try, you know our percentage goes down-' I walk out before he can finish his sentence.
All he cares about is his stupid percentages and exam results. He claims to care about his students and to show support in practically every assembly but that is just bull.
Seen as there is only a little while left until school ends, I gather up all my stuff and leave the building. I pass Lucy and Lily both sat on the steps. 'Hey Kiera.' I hear Lucy call (probably wanting to mock me as usual) but I cannot be bothered to reply, so I just ignore her and keep on walking.
