CHAPTER 3
I enter the Biology classroom and immediately feel disgusted by what I see. Instantly all eyes are on me which is fantastic (!)
The class is dissecting a cow’s heart and it's nothing but utterly disgusting. Doing things like this should be illegal. 'Kiera, nice of you to show up at last to my classroom,' Mrs. Donnegan catches my attention and snaps me out of my thoughts. I nod my head and say 'yes, I'm sorry I’m late Mrs. Donnegan, I promise it won't happen again.'
'Don't make promises that you can't keep and seen as you're late, you can work with Lucy and Lily over in the corner. I don't want to hear any talking.' I regret coming here after she told me where to sit. I should've stayed in the common room or I could've pretended to be ill. Mrs. Donnegan continues speaking but this time to the whole class, 'I repeat I don't want to hear any talking!' She raises her voice so everyone can hear her.
She looks at me and I just stand still until I realise she's telling me to go sit down in a weird way. 'Oh.' I mutter and take a seat next to Lily.
'No, move Kiera you're not sitting there.'
'Why not?'
'Because I’m aware of the fact that you and Lily talk too much when you're sitting next to one another.'
'I promise to not talk.'
'And I promise to stop breathing. Now move.' That was just rude. Plain rude.
'Where shall I sit?' I ask her.
'Next to Lucy.' I roll my eyes and sigh loudly and move next to Lucy. We all used to be best friends but now I and Lucy just don't get along. She chose to go her own way. It's not a big deal, old friends pass and eventually and new friends appear.
'Now class, the hearts are on the table, along with other things that you will need. I want you to identify all the four blood vessels and explain how we receive oxygen and what the jobs are of the four blood vessels. Don't forget to explain what valves are as you will be doing a presentation at the end of the class. Now get on with it.'
Lucy puts on her gloves and grabs a small knife. 'What do you think you're doing?' I ask her.
'Well, I don't see you do anything better and isn't it obvious?' She replies coldly. Lily also puts her gloves on and grabs a knife. They both look at me and I realise they're silently telling me to put my gloves on and grab a knife. God why do people say things silently when they're fully capable of saying things with words?
I put my gloves on very slowly and grab a knife. Lily and Lucy start dissecting. 'Stop!' I scream. Everyone turns to look at me.
'What's wrong Kiera?' Mrs. Donnegan asks.
'They're killing it, stop it!' I scream. They look at me confused and Lucy says 'they're already dead so I couldn't kill them even if I wanted to. I mean I always had you down as stupid, but I never knew you were this stupid.' The class snigger and laugh.
‘That’s enough!' Shouts Mrs. Donnegan.
'That shouldn't be allowed Mrs. Donnegan, that's wrong.'
'You're entitled to your own opinion' she replies coldly.
'Are you trying to say my opinion doesn't matter Mrs. Donnegan?'
'I didn't say that.'
'You didn't have to and it's not just my opinion, thousands of other people think exactly the same thing. What's the point in doing this? Everyone is just playing around with the heart of a cow, it's not a joke, it's sick and it's cruel.'
'Kiera, you need to calm down.'
'No, I will not calm down. All of us live in this planet and everyone has the right to live and die naturally. Why do we have to kill animals to learn about their organs when doctors a long time ago have already seen them? Why shouldn't we just leave dissection to the professionals? People like you make me sick.'
'I think you should leave the classroom Kiera.' I scoff and say 'you think I would want to stay here? If you do then you're obviously dumber than me and I honestly don't know how you got your degree.' I slam the door behind me. I can tell everyone is surprised by my sudden outburst but I was brought up to stand up for what I believe and I don't believe in animal cruelty.
'Kiera!' Mrs. Donnegan shouts and grabs my attention. 'Head teacher’s office now!' She shouts. I roll my eyes and walk off.
Look on the bright side, I get to miss Biology. Yay!
