They're Only ➵ Chapter 3

[Tris]

My alarm goes off on Tuesday morning and I fight every nerve in my body to not scream in agony to go to school. Even though nervous butterflies are swarming in my belly right now, that doesn't stop my hatred for school. I swing my covers over my body and let my cold feet touch the plush carpet that lies on my floor, glancing at the pale sunlight peaking through my bedroom.

I stand to my feet and stretch out my limbs. After taking a long shower, I blow dry my hair and look at the outfit Christina laid out for me; a pair of denim shorts with a white t-shirt that shows a peak of my stomach, and some converse and a cardigan since it's known for the classes to be cold―whatever climate.

I put on some eyeliner, and mascara with some peach colored lipstick. I straighten my hair and tuck the sides behind my ear. I leave in my gold nose ring and put on a long gold necklace and matching earrings. When I am finished, I swing my bag over my shoulder and grab my phone.

"Good morning!" My mom smiles at me when I reach the kitchen, I grab a bowl and fill it with cereal and milk. "See, things are different. Your first day as a Senior I was at work. Now I am home, your dad would be so proud of you!" She pinches my cheeks and I smile.

"Yeah," I whisper, feeling the locket on the inside of my shirt, "Christina, Lynn, and Will are going to pick me up in a few minutes. I just have orientation today and we get our schedules. So, it should be quick." After having a quick breakfast with my mom, I get a text from Christina saying she is outside. I bid my goodbyes to my mom and brother before I am in the back of Christina's car listening to Will and Christina sing to the music on the radio.

I bite my lip and look down at my phone. Tobias should have called by now, he knows that today is my first day of school. I told him last night before I went to bed. I haven't got a call, text, voicemail, even email. All I need right now is to be able to communicate with him somehow to stop my nerves from bouncing off of the walls. 

"We're here!" Will announces and we all look up and our mouths fall to the ground.

"Oh,"

"My,"

"Goodness." I say, I knew what U.O.C looked like by pictures, just never came here in person. It's huge! "This is really nice." I say as Will finds a parking spot that is really far from the main entrance. There are tall buildings with large glass windows and two separate parts. We get out of the car and start walking towards the building.

"This place is massive." Lynn says taking her earbuds out. I can't help but to nod my head in agreement.

"So this is the dining hall that you can come to for lunch or leave campus, it doesn't really matter." Johanna Reyes, the vice principal says showing us around. She is really nice, she has beautiful brown skin with a large scar going down her face, going across her left eye to her chin. She renders a lisp but beyond that, she is really peaceful and soft spoken. I can see me in her office many times to just talk.

I run my hand through my hair and let out a long sigh before I look down at my phone. I feel someone bump my shoulder and I glance up to see a tall boy with dark brown hair and light blue eyes, he gives me a smile and I return it. Christina, Lynn, and Will are more towards the front, listening intently. I am in the back, expecting a call or text from my boyfriend, "Long day already?" He smiles again.

I give a light chuckle, "No, I'm just expecting something." My boyfriend who should have called already! I don't want to text him to be pushy, maybe something came up. He's in college too you know, Tris. I shake my head, "Nothing important."

"Let me guess, you're either expecting a call from UPS or some significant other." A blush forms across my face as he chuckles a bit too loudly, "Hit it right on the head?" I nod. "Well I hope your package comes!" He says cheerfully. I physically face palm myself in the head and laugh at him.

"It's my boyfriend." I scratch my arm.

"Okay," He smiles again, "I'm Matthew."

"Tris."
