We sat in silence on the bus. The poorly lit lights flickered and the seats' leather teared at the hems. The only sound we really heard was the crushing of pebbles below us and the crashes of puddles that we drove over. The music was so quiet we could only tell it was on by the fact that the bus driver was bobbing his head and snapping his wrinkled fingers at stop lights. We didn't understand why he bothered to stop the bus when it was in the middle of the night. We also didn't understand why this older man was driving a bus this late. I stared out the window. Most of the stores were locked up and abandoned. The only activity were the little led bulb lights that stood in the windows. The light off of the street lamps reflected from the windows, along with the light from the bus. I could see myself. A mess. I shook my head and looked away from the window. And to the guy who was looking the other way. His eyes as soft as the rest of his features. He just looked... Safe. He glanced at me. Catching me staring at him. And instead of scolding me or cringing, he smiled warmly.
"You do like coffee right or this is a bad idea," He said with a grin. I chuckled.
"No I only drink water."
"Really?" He panicked.
"No I drink coffee," I smiled.
When we got there I stared for a few seconds.
The place was really cute. And I somehow never knew it existed.
"Coming?" He asked. I nodded and followed.
I gripped the hot cup tightly. Letting the heat waves flow through my hands. Feeling relief follow. I brought the cup to my lips and sipped. The hot liquid soothing my throat.
"Why did you and your friend fight?" Shawn asked. I looked at him.
"She didn't understand why I keep drinking," I mumbled.
"Drinking," He repeated. I looked down, humiliated. This guy seemed so perfect and look at how much of a disgrace I am.
"I know. It's ridiculous and I-"
"Don't worry Y/N. We all have flaws remember."
"You don't seem to have any," I remarked.
He stirred his coffee with his straw laughing.
"You have only had one conversation with me sweetie. You don't know me," He said.
"Then what are your flaws?"
"No."
"Come on Shawn since we are getting personal."
"I ran away from home," He replied.
"Okay why. How is it bad?" He bit his lip. Clearly not wanting to tell me. But he did.
"I left my little sister behind. With crazy parents," He said quietly. I tried to think of the best way to go around what he just said.
"Have you contacted her?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Too scared."
"You should. It will probably make her feel a lot better. You too."
"How about we make a deal. You promise me to not drink anymore and I will call my sister right now. Even if it is like dead night," He smiled. I tugged my lip between my teeth.
"Yes," I decided. "Call her."
He closed his eyes for a minute then he sighed.
He dialed the number. And he was shaking. He looked up at me and I smiled.
"Hello?" The voice asked.
"Aaliyah," Shawn breathed.
"Shawn?!" Her voice was filled with excitement.
"I'm sorry that I waited so long yo talk to you and I'm sorry that I never gave you a warning or any closure. I'm so sorry that I just called late at night and that I left you alone," He rambled.
"Shawn it's okay. I'm just glad to hear you are alive and well," She sounded like she was crying. Which made me tear up. I studied the happiness on his face. The shock. His jaw was slack. Still amazed.
"I will try to see you once you are on summerbreak Aaliyah. How are the parents?" He asked. She didn't respond.
"Actually. I'm with Aunt Marge. Mom and dad are in rehab."
Rehab?
They were getting help.
"Well why don't you spend summerbreak with me? I'm only two hours away!"
"Shawn I will ask Marge. I would love to. I miss you."
"I miss you too. Hey how about I call you again in the morning. Right now I am on a midnight date with this really pretty girl in a cafe," He explained.
"Date?!" I exclaimed.
"Duh," He grinned.
"Aw. That is cute. I will have to meet her too."
"I think you will our first date was a sucesss," Shawn winked at me. I rolled my eyes.
"It was not a date."
"Yes it was. Bye Aaliyah."
"Bye Shawn."
"I love you."
He ended the call. And got up. And I got up. He hugged me. My eyes widened.
"A thank you hug."
I stood a second. But then I wrapped my arms back around him. Relaxing.
"Your welcome Shawn."
