"did you take pictures?" theresa finally says to selena after absorbing what she had said. she tried to open up, but instantly realised she couldn't tell theresa how her and justin met simply because she tried to commit suicide in that moment.
"no. me and justin had this rule where we would block out the outside world, so he confiscated my phone." selena shrugs, taking a seat opposite of where theresa was sitting.
"that's a shame." then came the awkward silence. would it feel like this all the time? selena thought. if opening up and allowing people know how she feels would be this awkward, is there a point?
"i liked the idea of it," selena finally says, trying her best not to build up that wall justin said she had guarding her.
"really? i thought you couldn't live without your phone," theresa jokes.
"that was before. i like not being swallowed up by social media." selena shrugs. the realisation hit her: selena's own best friend didn't know anything about her; the wall justin had spoken about before became more evident in selena's eye.
"must be refreshing," theresa tries to bond with her. selena nods her head, feeling the awkwardness again. it became deadly silent. she tried to divert her eyes away from theresa, where she was staring at her intensively. "well, you must be tired, go upstairs and take a nap, or something. i'll unpack for you."
selena meets eye contact with her for a second, before looking away. she could see she was trying. "thanks." standing up from the chair, she walks towards the stairs. she hears another chair scrape against the floor.
"selena," she hears her best friend call out, making her turn around. "thank you. i mean – thank you for speaking to me, i'm grateful."
"i'm trying," selena mutters, acing a smile and turning on her heels, ascending the stairs.
