"Set out an alert for Jack and Lisa Smithfield, they are unarmed but have means to kidnap young girls," Lieutenant Benson was telling the group we set up for the search. She also gave out possible addresses they could go to and what car we're looking for. "Leave no stone unturned."
I was at the hospital with Ashely with a cop posted at her door.
"So they just left?"
"Yeah, but don't worry we'll get them," I took her hand.
"Thank you for being so kind to me during this whole nightmare."
"You went through something horrible, you only deserve kindness and support."
She smiled while tears started falling. "Thank you."
"Hey, don't cry, I might start crying too."
She laughed and wiped at her face. "I've never felt such warmth."
My heart pained for this girl, she's been through so much. "Can I get you anything? Food or a drink?"
"Food sounds good but don't leave me please," she gripped my arm tightly, fear in her eyes.
"It's ok, sweetheart, I'll ask the cop to bring us something."
We asked the cop and he said he would be back in ten minutes. So I talked a little more with Ashely.
"Your first week on the job? Must be rough."
"Not really, I expected this. I knew what this job would bring."
She nodded. "How's your family?"
"Worried. My mom put up a fight about me leaving."
"What about your dad?"
"Uh-." Just then the parents burst through the door with guns.
"Get down now!," the father shouted at me.
"Alright, alright, just don't hurt the girl," I pleaded. While they had their eyes trained on me I called Sonny discreetly, he was the nearest detective at the moment. I put the phone under the bed while it recorded.
"Put your hands up!"
I put my hands up. "Just don't hurt her!"
"Jack we have to hurry before that other cop comes back!," the mom was at the door.
"What about this cop?"
"Shoot her, we just need Ashely."
The dad clicked his gun when Ashely spoke, startling me. "Leave her alone! Just take me alright, I'll go with you! Leave her out of this," she got up and pulled out her IV needle.
"Ashely, you need to stay here. You need help," I tried to persuade her.
"Sorry, detective," she took my gun from my holster and hit me with the bottom of it.
I woke up in the ER then. I knew there was just a cut and some bruising so they didn't bother changing me into a gown. I had a headache though. I looked over next to me to see Sonny with his head in his hands.
"You got some aspirin?"
He raised his head and called for a nurse. "Your first week on the job and you're already in the hospital? What's up with that?"
I smirked. "Isn't that like a right of passage or something?"
"That might explain why everyone keeps on calling me New Guy."
I laughed but then I remembered why I was here. I looked down and noticed my gun was in my holster. "Did you guys catch them?"
Sonny sighed and leaned forward. "We got the parents but, Maia, they shot the girl beforehand. She was dead when we pulled the car over in the parking garage."
My heart stopped. I heard nothing felt nothing but pain in my heart. "I. I can't believe this."
"This isn't on you, ok."
I was crying then. "But it is, I should've pulled my gun on them or distracted them, something!"
"They would've killed you, Maia. Listen to me this isn't your fault!," he grabbed my hand.
"Better me than her. She was so young, she didn't even get to see the world."
"Don't say that. She did have you though. She talked about you to the doctors and nurses, she said that you were the kindest person she's ever met."
I was shaking by then. "Thanks."
Sonny pulled me in and hugged me.
"This job is rough, don't let it beat you down."
The moment ended as soon as my mom came in with my brother and step dad, Geraldo, in tow. "Amores! What happened? I told you that bike was dangerous! Who's this?"
I started laughing. "Ma, stop. This is my partner at work."
Sonny stood up. "Detective Dominick Carisi, ma'am. You can call me Sonny."
She returned the handshake and moved over to me. "Es el hombre?"
I looked at her. "Ma!"
"Uh, the lieutenant is calling me, I better take this," Sonny walked away with his phone out, ears turning pink.
"He's probably translating what you just said right now! Ugh!," I sat back defeated and embarrassed.
"So what he probably likes you too. I saw him hugging you pretty tight."
"He's my partner, ma."
She shook her head at me. "Sure."
"What's up?"
"What's up? I get a call saying my kid is in the emergency room, that's what's up!"
"It was a hostage situation, I was hit that's all."
"Nuh-uh. You are coming back home, you can work at the school like you said before all of this cop nonsense."
"I'm new at this job, ma. I know what I'm doing. Mira, por favor, calm down. A little girl died today."
She looked at me and understood. "You helped her?"
I could feel tears coming back. "She was abused by people who were supposed to care for her and the only person who showed her that was me. I showed her kindness and what happened she was killed."
"Oh, mija. No hables asi."
My family hugged me then. I heard someone clear their throat, it was Sonny. "The court hearing is tomorrow and they want you to testify.
