Fin and I headed out to go catch this asshole. Fin called Liv and told her everything we came up with about this guy. How he's probably a professional and he's been doing this for sometime. Who knows how many victims he has? Rollins and Carisi headed to Long Island to sit on Joe's beach house in case he goes there to lay low. Fin and I were on route to where a couple of UNI's spotted the car. I was driving, my nerves on edge and every possible outcome running through my mind. If we do catch this guy he'll be put on trial, hopefully the DNA matches with the water bottle but he's rich, he'll be out in no time. A fancy lawyer will see to that, or he'll do time in some cushy jail cell.
"We're not gonna get this one," I whispered to Fin once he ended his call with Liv.
"What do you mean, Garcia? We've got this."
I shook my head once I spotted his car.
It was pulled off to the side and I could see him walking up a small hill. I could see a gun in his hand too. I parked and ran out after him. I cursed myself for not grabbing a vest. What the hell was he doing off to the side of the road?
"Joe? Put your hands up, now!," I kept my distance as did Fin.
"Detective?," I could hear the smile in his voice. "I was hoping you'd come find me. Shame you didn't bring that blonde detective."
He's not gonna shoot himself, he's too proud of his work for that. "Put the gun down, Joe. Come quietly."
He shook his head. "Put your gun down, detective. I only want to talk."
"Then we'll all put our guns down."
He nodded and he tossed his gun. I put my mine down but he didn't see Fin put his in his jacket pocket. Joe was only concerned about me.
"I didn't kill those women you saw, the photos under my mattress, I assume you found them. One of the girls, yes, but so many others you don't know about," he rambled as I walked closer to him. I put a hand out to Fin to keep him back.
"I know. The pattern was uneven," I told him.
"Smart girl," he started walking towards me till we were a few feet from each other. "If you're as smart as you look then you'll understand why I pulled off here."
I kept his words in the back of my mind. "Let's go, Joe, you can explain this all to me down at the station."
He laughed lightly. "That's why I always liked blondes, they were dumb and they gave up easily. Not brunettes like you."
I put my hands out toward him to show him I was being sincere. "Come on now, we can talk about this on the ride back."
"Do you know what weapon I am most fond of," his tone shifting as well as his face, a shadow coming across it.
I braced myself. "A knife."
He nodded and pulled one out from his back pocket. "That's right."
He rushed at me. We needed him alive, so we couldn't shoot him, he needed to pay for his crimes even if that meant he would be paying for it in a high end corrections facility for the rest of his life. We fought, I landed a punch and he nicked me a few times. Fin tried to step in but I couldn't get him a fair shot. Until finally, Joe stabbed me in the arm. I cried out in pain. He was smiling down at me when Fin came over and knocked him out with the butt of his gun.
"Keep that knife in there Garcia, medics are on their way," Fin helped me up.
I nodded.
He looked worried as he cuffed Joe.
I walked over to our car and looked at the wound. Blood was trickling out but it looked ok.
Fin locked Joe in the back and walked over to me.
"Why does this keep happening to me?"
Fin laughed. "It's your height. They think because you're small you'll put up less of a fight."
I shook my head. "And here I was thinking that heels would have taken care of that."
I could see the red lights flashing in the distance. "Liv's not gonna be happy."
"Why?"
"I keep getting hurt, she's gonna wanna pull me out of SVU."
Fin shook his head. "The way I see it, she'll think you're tough and bounce back from a stab wound or two."
"Two! You think this'll happen again?"
He laughed. "I wouldn't doubt it."
"Christ."
As the medic was taking care of my arm I thought about what Joe said about the place he chose. I thanked the medic, who told me we needed to get to the hospital asap, and walked over to where Joe was standing when we found him. I looked down at the ground which looked undisturbed for the most part. Feeling woozy, I walked over to Fin who was on the phone with Liv.
"Tell her to request a crime scene unit," I asked.
"What for?," Fin looked behind me.
"I think there's a dead body here. Joe said that there was something significant about him being here, maybe it's a body."
I was rushed to the hospital, the EMTs told me I didn't lose too much blood since I kept the blade in my arm but I would need stitches. I was stabbed in the muscular part of my arm so I would be alright. The cuts Joe got in before he stabbed me were bandaged up too. I was lying back when I remembered too late to tell them not to call my mom. She rushed in with my brother and my step dad, worry written on their faces.
"Shit," I whispered to myself.
"I want to speak to your boss," my mom was angry. "Why does this keep happening? Don't you have a partner to watch over you?"
"He wasn't there, ma. And no, you cannot talk to my boss."
"Garcia," Liv walked in. "Are you alright?"
I nodded to Liv. Shit.
"No she isn't. She's been in here more times than when she was a regular cop! What is going on?," my step dad, Joe, stepped in to talk but my mom was taking charge of who to blame.
"Lieutenant, this is my mom, Marisol, and step dad, Jose," I tried to stand but the nurse came in and pushed me back down, handing me some juice.
"Where is her partner? He's supposed to be here to back her up?," my mom wasn't letting Liv get a word in.
I looked at my brother and he looked back at me shrugging. "How are you doing, Gerry?"
"Fine," Geraldo replied taking a seat next to me. "What was it like getting stabbed?"
My mom shushed him when he asked this.
"I felt nothing, honestly," I smiled at him.
"Cool," he nodded as he took out his phone, ignoring everyone else.
Sonny walked in quickly, his eyes landing on me. "Maia, are you ok?"
"Where were you, cabrón? She's not ok, look at her," my mom started ranting again.
"Ma! Jesus, calm down I'm fine. He wasn't there I told you," I was smiling at the fact that Sonny turned red with embarrassment.
"Who was there? Were you alone?"
"I was with her," Fin entered the room with a gift bag. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Garcia. The perp was attacking her but I couldn't shoot him because I might've missed and hit your daughter. She handled the guy and I stepped in before he could hurt her again," Fin took out a stuffed bear he bought from the gift shop and gave it to me, it had a bandaged arm. He sent me a small smile. "Sorry, Garcia."
I thanked him. "You don't need to apologise. I'm fine."
My mom sucked in a breath to argue some more but I looked at her. "I'm fine, ma. Can we go now, I'm starving."
Before I left the hospital I made sure to take my mom off of the emergency contacts list. I put Sonny's number down instead.
