I was startled awake by my phone the next morning.
"Hello?"
"Detective Garcia?"
I jolted up in bed and looked at the time on my phone, it was 6 am, I don't go into work until 8? "Yeah, this is me."
"Sorry to wake ya, it's Sonny. We just got a big case we need ya to come in."
"Yeah, I'm on my way."
I got dressed, put my safety gear on, grabbed my wallet and keys before walking out of my apartment. I received a text from Sonny about the location to meet up at.
I got there pretty fast on my bike. There was police tape, and cop cars all around the scene. The location of my first case was under a bridge. I got off my bike and walked quickly to where I could see Sonny.
"I'm a detective," I showed my badge to the cop as I approached.
"Over here, Maia," I saw Sonny wave me over. "Good morning."
"Good morning, Sonny. What do we have?"
His face turned grim. "A hobo found the body when he was digging through the trash."
Just then Liv came over to me. "Garcia. You made it."
"Good morning, Lieutenant."
She looked impressed.
"What else do we know so far," I asked.
"The body he found was that of a young girl, she's barely alive. From the looks of it she was attacked."
I shook my head.
"They're taking her to the hospital right now. There's no ID on her so we'll have to look into missing persons."
"She has tearing in her vaginal region and anal. There's no semen on her clothes or in her vagina or anus. There are traces of lubricant, from the condom the attacker wore. No skin under her fingernails either. Her tox screening shows high levels of drugs in her system so she might've been asleep during the whole ordeal but we're not positive. She's asleep right now. Any luck contacting the parents?"
"We're looking into that. Thank you nurse," Olivia sighed heavily.
My heart dropped when she started talking about the girl.
"Hey, you okay?," Sonny came over to me.
I shook my head. "I'll be fine."
"Alright, check facial recognition and see if anything comes up," Olivia went into her office when we got back to the precint.
I was on my computer while a scan was working on our Jane Doe's face. It was a while until her missing persons ad popped up.
"I got a hit for our vic, Ashely Janice Smithfield."
Everyone came over to me as I searched for her social media pages. Maybe they can give us her address so that we can speak to her parents.
"Looks like the ad was put in by a friend," Amanda spoke up as she read the file.
Not the parents, odd. "Well she was a well rounded gal, in a bunch of clubs and very friendly."
"Something that can be used against you," Fin added.
"She's checked in at her house once," I pointed out.
I went back to the hospital with Rollins at Olivia's request to check up on Ashely. I had told her before that I was very soothing around people and that they liked to confide in me. She sent me to see if Ashely was up to talking.
I walked into her room with a little stuffed cat, her Facebook account showed us that she loved cats. She was awake and looking at the wall away from the door.
"Hello, Ashely. How are you feeling, dear?," I asked softly as I walked around the bed.
"I've been better," she coughed. Her throat was all blue and purple from strangulation. I handed her the cat. She smiled and wiped away a tear that fell. "Thank you."
Amanda came over beside me with her memo book out. "Ashely, I know you're in a lot of pain. Do you think you're up to talking about what happened?"
She sighed. "I guess but I don't remember much."
I sat down on the chair that was near the bed and took out my notebook and pen. "Can you tell me what you do remember?"
"I remember being at home, in my room, and that's it. I kinda remember laughing and the grunts," she made a disgusted face. "I remember being on something like a mattress."
"You're doing great, Ashely," I consoled her.
"I also remember bumps like I was in a car or van. Then grabbing and a pinch, then it went black," she felt at her neck where there was a bruise from the injection.
"Anything else?," Rollins pressed.
"Not right now, if I do I'll let you know."
We got up then and were about to leave when she spoke again. "Can you tell the doctor or nurse that I don't want any visitors please?"
"We will," I assured her.
We were still at the hospital when Olivia and Sonny came in. We had already told them what happened over the phone.
"We talked to the parents. They're on their way," Olivia warned.
"What's wrong?" I spoke.
"You'll see," Sonny shook his head.
Just then the parents ran in. "Ashely? Our daughter? Where is she?," the mother started yelling. The mother and father looked a bit wrecked and if I was honest, guilty. I got a sense from them, I don't know what but they seemed guilty. And I felt anger towards them.
"Are you Ashely's parents?," Fin questioned.
"Yes, yes, we are!"
"She's awake but the doctor says she can't have any visitors at the moment," Rollins stepped in.
"That's not fair, she's our daughter!," the mom screamed at us.
Lieutenant Benson's eyebrows raised and put her hands in front of her. "I'll see what I can do." She motioned us to follow her.
We were down the hall when Olivia filled us in. "We went to their house and we had to knock on the door several times before they answered. We asked if they knew that their daughter was missing."
"The mom said 'huh' like she didn't even know who we were talking about," Sonny added.
"We asked the mom again and then it finally dawns on her. The husband comes over and he was the same, confused at first then he complied," Olivia whispered.
"So they didn't even know their own daughter was missing?" I inquired.
"More like did they care?," Sonny looked back at the parents with suspicion.
