A couple of weeks passed until the final court date, I waited all day for a text from Sonny saying if we had won or not. Today was when the verdict would be in. I paced around my apartment, cleaned up my room, and took a bath to kill some time. Once they sent the text I would drive over as fast as I could to the club. They needed to know how much I cared about them and I had a couple of ideas up my sleeve, or under my coat, that could help out.
I was taking a nap when I got a call from Sonny.
"Maia, we won!"
I got up so fast and grabbed my keys and purse to head out. "Thanks, Sonny."
I hung up and got into my car, heading over to the club.I got there before the girls did and waited at the bar for them to arrive. I still had a key to the place, I would open up early or prep the bar. It felt so empty and dark without all of the lights and the rowdy customers. The cops had left everything as it was but the basement was empty.
I was sitting on a bar stool when I heard them talking outside.
"What are we going to do now, Pearl?"
"What can we do?"
I stood as the door opened. When they walked in and saw me they stopped.
"Hey," I put on a small smile.
Pearl dropped her purse and I prepared myself for a punch, a slap, or shouting but instead was wrapped in a hug.
"Missed ya, sweetie," she was crying a bit.
"Missed you more, hun," I started to cry as well.
The girls gathered around us and we had a big group hug.
"What are you doing here? They said you were pulled from the case," Julia asked.
"Now that it's over, I came hoping I could get in your good graces. Plus, today is my day off. Which means," I pulled off my coat to show them that I was wearing a short red dress and heels to match. "We're gonna have some fun."
They all shouted in excitement but it died down when they realized that they were jobless.
"What about the club? What are we gonna do about jobs?," Sophie asked.
I smiled. "I have an idea.""Take over the club? Are you serious?," Ava poured us all shots while I talked.
"Yes I am. I even have the paperwork in my purse if you guys agree. Julia, you know how to put in orders for liquor and make bomb ass drinks. Pearl, you can keep track of all of the bills and stuff. Quinn knows how to work music. You guys all have something to offer this place."
"What about the money?"
"What about it? You guys can all pull in and I've brought the cash I made working here to help out."
They were all taking this in.
"What do you think, Pearly?," I asked her.
She stood up and walked around. "We're gonna need to redecorate."
The girls all started shouting.Pearl signed the documents to put in for a new bar license under her name and property owner status. Quinn put on some music and we drank well into the night. I told them about being a cop and how it was more dangerous than working here. They asked me all kinds of questions like what's it like, do I get benefits, have I ever been cuffed while not on the job. They forgave me and I, as I said I would, helped them.
"They don't deserve you, you know," Pearl sat next to me handing me a drink.
I smiled down at the floor. "Thanks, hun, but I don't do it for them. I do it for the people, kids, that need help."
Pearl smiled at me and pulled me in for a hug. "You saved us, sugar. What are we gonna do without ya?"
I hugged her back. "I'll come back for ladies night and you and me can go out for breakfast, if you'd like."
She wiped away some tears from her eyes. "I'd like that very much, sugar."Well into the night we all had too much to drink. I had to call Sonny to come and pick me up.
"I'll be back again, ladies," I called out when Pearl carried me outside to wait for Sonny.
They all started laughing and cheering. I saw Sonny's car coming down the street when we made it outside, we were tripping over each other's feet.
Pearl's face was flushed and no doubt mine was too.
"You sure you can trust this guy?," Pearl was worried.
I giggled a little and gave her a wink. "Yeah, I'm sure. He's a Catholic boy."
She shook her head. "You know what they say about the ones who follow religion? They're the kinkiest."
I was laughing so hard that I hadn't noticed Sonny parked in front of us.
He got out of the car and came over to help me in.
"Bye, my love," I shouted to Pearl.
"Bye, sugar, see you Sunday," she waved us away."You have fun?," Sonny asked.
I nodded and touched his arm. "Yes, we had a lot of fun."
I felt his eyes on me from time to time, no doubt looking at my outfit.
He chuckled lightly.
"What?," I asked.
"You're gonna feel it tomorrow at work."
I pouted. "Oh, well. At least you'll be there to pull my hair back if I puke."
He shook his head. "You'll have to hold mine back if you do."
I laughed and looked at him. His hair slicked back, his jawline, and his ears that were pink from the cold. I knew deep down that I couldn't make a move on him, not right now while I was intoxicated. He just looked so damn handsome right now.
"I'm sorry if I pulled you away from something important," I looked down at my hands.
"I was just at home watching TV," he shrugged.
I nodded. He pulled up to my apartment and helped me out and up to my place. When I got inside I kicked off my heels and threw my purse onto the couch.
"Wanna drink?," I asked Sonny.
"No, I'm good," he stood near the door with his coat on. Waiting for me to say goodnight to him. My mind had other plans, or the liquor I drank had other plans. Everyone acts different while drunk or drugged. My mom is an affectionate drunk, while myself am an over sharing one.
"Do you want to know the real reason why I care so much for those girls," I shrugged off my coat and sat down with my legs against my chest on the couch.
Sonny looked down at me, uncertain. "Sure."
I sighed. "I told them the truth about myself. I was supposed to lie to them but I had gotten drunk and," I stopped a bit and cringed. "I told them about him."
"Who?"
I shook my head, coming to terms with what I was about to say. I stood and walked to my room, wiping tears away as I did. "Goodnight, Sonny. I apologise."
I guess I hadn't gotten drunk enough.
