*Just to clear things up I am not sponsoring BuzzFeed I really like what this video has to say about mental health. The road to recovery is long but you will get there. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness, take care of yourself.*
We talked well into the morning, she gave me healthy relationship advice and I told her about the case with the twin girls. She sobbed when I described the case.
"Like us," she said through sobs.
"Yeah, except they had help in the end."
We drank up almost two pots of tea until we finally fell asleep. It was nine in the morning when we woke up. I pulled on my glasses before getting out of bed to make us some soup. I wear contacts to work so no one breaks my glasses. I had to learn that the hard way. El was putting on a show for us to watch. I got a text from Sonny asking about how I was doing. I told him a bit better but sorer than yesterday. Probably from all of the talking from last night.
He said he would stop by as soon as he can. I told him I couldn't wait.
"I think we should go to a doctor first and then go see about adopting a dog," El looked over at me to see if I had changed my mind.
"Sounds good. When is the show tonight?," my neck was still bruised and sore, my voice even worse than last night.
"I think you should just text me your responses. You sound terrible," she got up and went into the kitchen to put a pot of water to boil for tea. "The show is tonight at eight."
"How am I gonna talk to the doctor then?"
She came back into the living room and shushed me. "Save your voice until you get there. Explain that you're a cop and what happened."
I shook my head and pulled out my phone. Her phone pinged with the text I sent her.
"This sucks. Yeah, I know, but you have to do this. Trust me you'll feel better for the days to come."
I sent her a thumbs up and went back to drinking my soup.
El made me some tea before we got ready to leave. There was a knock on my door so I ran to the living room, pulling my leggings up, and looked through the hole to see Sonny standing there with a small smile on his face. I opened the door flashing him a toothy grin.
"Hey, gorgeous, I brought you a care package," he held up the bag and handed it to me. "You wear glasses?"
I nodded, yes.
"You look great with em," he looked down at my outfit probably expecting pajamas. "You heading out? That's good you can get some fresh air."
I nodded and sent him a quick text from my phone.
"I'm on vocal rest. Got worse, huh?," he rubbed my arm.
I nodded and sent him another text.
"Going out with sis for a little bit might get a dog! That sounds great!"
I smiled again and nodded. This no talking thing really sucks.
"I'm ready!," El called out from the bathroom.
I sent her a text saying that I hardly believed her.
"Shut up, Maia! You know I like to make sure that my makeup looks on point!," she stepped into the living room and saw me standing there with Sonny, who was laughing a bit at our antics. "Who's this?"
"I'm Dominick Carisi, Maia's partner at work. You can call me Sonny," he held his hand out to her. I could see the number of questions building in his mind when he saw her. Ella and I looked very different from each other but that was something to talk about on another day.
She took it giving him a firm and threatening handshake. "I'm her sister El."
"Nice to meet you. I better get going before the Lieutenant starts calling. I'll see if I can come by later with my ma's chicken soup, works wonders," he gave me a quick hug and said goodbye to El before taking off.
"Soooo. That's the guy," El said eyeing the door.
I nodded with a smile on my face. I looked in the bag to see he had brought me cough drops, tea, and a balm for my neck. What a sweet guy.
"Did I hear him right? Did he call you gorgeous?," she asked me while wiggling her eyebrows.
I texted her.
"Yeah he did! Oh my God," she rolled her eyes at my reply.
We left the apartment and made our way to the therapist's office that I found on my health care plan. The doctor I choose came highly recommended. We were waiting in her lobby for awhile which was making me more anxious. My leg was bouncing up and down like crazy.
El put her phone down and looked at me. "Calm down, Mai. It's gonna be fine she's a professional and has probably seen and heard worse things in that office. If you feel uncomfortable with her just say so and we'll find another doctor."
I nodded and drank from my to go mug of tea. I was wearing an oversized turtleneck sweater to hide the mark, hopefully she won't notice and tell me to quit my job.
"Maia, she's ready for you," her receptionist called to me. I stood up and hugged El before heading into Dr. Wilson's office. When I walked in my breath caught in my throat, her office was filled with books. She had comfortable chairs and even some fidget toys to keep busy with. My fear lingered but it was somewhat soothed by her warm presence.
"Hello, dear. Please have a seat. This meeting won't take long I will be assessing you for future sessions here," she sounded older but her face told me she was young.
I nodded and sat back in the sofa. I took a sip from my mug to soothe my throat for the conversation to come.
