Liv and I left with the girls to the hospital so they could get checked out. "I wanted to thank you for last night, Noah had a lot of fun he keeps asking for you," Liv talked while we waited outside of the examine room.
"Really?," I was so wrapped up by this case that I had forgotten about everything else.
"Yeah he says 'can we go back to the party?'."
I laughed. "That's so sweet, if you ever need a babysitter or help planning a party, call me."
She smiled. "I'll remember that."
We walked into the room to check on how the girls were doing, Liv went to talk to Andreea and I talked to Camila.
"How are you doing?," I leaned against the wall, giving her space.
"Fine, you should be with my sister. She's the one who needs support right now, not me," she looked away.
"Everyone needs support, especially in rough situations like this."
She rubbed at her eyes, tears threatening to spill. "I was never there you know. I feel like I should have helped her or seen something going on."
"You shouldn't beat yourself up about what happened, what matters is that you're here for her now."
"You know what my family will see, a girl who wasn't there to protect her sister. While she's going through hell right now I'm going through what? A few bruises on my arms? This isn't a contest but when we're on the stand, the jury will see that."
I was at a loss for words but I knew how she felt. "We are all fighting through hell some more than others. That doesn't make anyone's fight less than someone else's. Your sister needs you right now and if you really wanna help her, talk to her, console her. She needs you as much as you need her."
She nodded just as a tear fell. When Liv entered the room Camila wiped at her face.
"Your sister wants to see you," Liv looked to her.
"Thank you," she told me before walking away.
"What did you tell her?," Liv asked.
"I gave her some advice I wished someone would have told me when I was going through the worst."
Back at the precinct we let them stay in the room that had beds so they could get some rest. We've been contacting an aunt that they said was really nice and would be willing to take them in. She lived in Wisconsin so it was going to be hours till she got here.
I was so overwhelmed by all of this that I had started on my third cup of coffee this afternoon. I took my jacket off and sat down at my desk.
"What's that?," Sonny asked pointing to his chest but nodding his head towards me. He saw my tattoo, a cursive E.
"Sneaking peaks, Sonny?," I joked as I took a seat.
"No, I just noticed it and-".
"It's fine. I got it years back for someone I love."
He smiled. "That's nice."
I touched the tattoo thinking about that someone and this case we were working on. I got up and grabbed my jacket to head outside to make a call.
"Gotta make a quick call," I said to Sonny so that he wouldn't follow me. It was starting to get darker as the day wore on, and colder as November was here. I dialed the number and waited for her to answer.
I got the voicemail instead.
"Hey, it's me. Um. I'm calling because I wanted to say that I miss you and that I love you," I blinked away the tears that threatened to fall. "We've been through so much and I just wanted to say that I'm sorry for everything. I hope we can catch up soon, it's been so long. Love you." I hung up the phone and brushed away a few tears as I headed back upstairs.
