Chapter 9

It's 12:00 pm and I'm still awake, staring out the large window at the bright moon. Alice and July are asleep in their rooms. I don't know why I couldn't sleep, I felt like I needed to stay awake.

Suddenly, I could hear a light rapping on the door. I slowly padded on my fluffy purple slippers over to the red wood door and spoke through the peep hole, "Who is it?"

I waited a few minutes at the locked door before I heard an answer that almost knocked me flat,"It's Simon."

Thoughts were swirling in my mind like a hive of bees as the unmistakable voice of Simon rung in my ears. Why was he here? I took a deep breath and slowly opened the door, revealing Simon. The boy who always wanted to be our friend, the boy at school no one liked, the boy I thought was normal.

"Can I come in?" He asked nonchalantly. I was almost angry at how normal he was acting in spite of the situation.

I let him in without a word and locked the door behind us. He sat down on the sofa across from me and spoke in hushed whispers before I had the chance to ask anything.

"Hey...." He blushed. How could he blush at a time like this!"This must be a shock....I really couldn't come in any later, I had to tell you now.."

"What....Simon," His name on my tongue felt wrong..Like my mouth was confused at my choice of words.

"I thought I would let you know that I'm like you...I mean....I have been a guardian these past years like your parents....Or..Your other guardians..I..I also wanted you to know that I.."

I interrupted him, "What! So...So your magical to! but.....what can you do?"

He sighed, "Talk to animals....but you need to know that I l...."

I interrupted him again without feeling any guilt,"You can talk to animals! No way! Come on! lets go to the forest! I want to show you what I can do!" I felt excited, not scared anymore. I was almost bursting to show what I could do right here, right now. But the forest would be better. More natural.

I took him by the arm, ignoring his pleading calls to stop, and ran with him out the door and down the stairs and through the gardens and to the forest. The big forest, full of life and love and things I had yet to explore. It was all happening so fast I didn't even think about where I was until I was there, In this part of the forest...Were the red wood trees and willow branches were replaced by a valley of towering blue mushrooms, sparkling in the moon light. How did I get here. It was beautiful. There was a glimmering pond in the center of the mushroom forest, weeds and pink lilies floated along the top of the crystal clear water.

"Wow..." Simon breathed,"How did you find this place...."

"I dont know...I never even went here...I guess I wasn't watching were I was going and..."

"No! This place is from an old story...I never thought it existed...It;s beautiful," He said as we sat down on a large mushroom, It's light reflecting on our skin, making us blue. Fire fly's buzzed around our heads and I felt myself smile.

I glanced at this strange boy I only just really noticed and saw him blushing feverishly,"This is the perfect place to tell you that..." He spoke softly, leaning in closer.

I felt his breath on my neck and closed my eyes as he spoke these words,"I love you, Sky. You never noticed, but I always had."
