I was riding on the green dragon behind Alice. July was in the front. Zayne and Simon and Jasper rode on Zaynes dragon. We were flying slowly because the fog surrounding us was thick, so thick that you could probably cut it with a dull knife. We couldn't tell wether we were close to the ground or high above the trees. It was a disguised valley we had yet to uncover.
July slowed her dragon and we watched quietly as she put her hands out to the sides and made a vague pushing motion, the fog cleared in the directions she pushed and we were able to fly faster and make out the distant view of a charred valley. We dipped our flight towards the dirty ground and examined the land as we drifted on. It was a barren, detested land....the only trees visible growing, or standing on the rocky ground were black and had no leaves, only iffy twigs on the verge of snapping off their bases. It was all we could see.
"Stop...Land your dragons, we get off here." Zayne held out his hand and we parked our sullen dragons on the ground. We hopped off and stood behind Zayne in a huddled group. The fog in front of us was thick and we had no idea what Zayne was staring at through it. Was their something besides scarce land behind that wall of fog? Apparently there was, because Zayne was making a big show of putting his foot through it and checking for something.
"What are you doing?" I said, watching my brother curiously.
"The bridge...." Jasper whispered.
We watched, interested, as Zayne placed his hand on something through the fog, his face a look of satisfaction. The fog dispersed and we could see what Zayne was looking for. He had his hand on the rail of a wobbly rope bridge. Below the cringe worthy bridge was a deep trench that was so black and full of gray smog that it was impossible to see how deep it went or what was at the bottom.
"Okay...Typical rickety bridge with the typical terrifying trench....let's get our dragons and fly over it, shall we Mr. Mysterious," Simon said Cooley, running his fingers through his wind swept hair.
"Shut up, will you?" Zayne spat "you can't fly over this because there is nothing to fly over." He reached his arm upwards and placed his hand on an invisible ceiling, "This barrier goes all the way up to where we can't breath....and if you try to fly under it...we'll....let's just say only in dire circumstances....so no we can't fly over, we would dye of suffocation."
"One thing that's bothering me....I don't have my wings on me right now so if I fall, it will most likely be to my death," Alice said sarcastically, lifting her wings up to make her point clear.
Zayne smirked , "Well...this is the only way to Ezra's fortress...Do you want you wings back or not?"
Alice sighed and pushed her way past him, stepping onto the first rope rung of the bridge. We gasped and watched as she steadily made her way five rungs out with out falling to her certain death. We had no choice but to follow her. My stomach felt like the ocean on the Krakens bad day.....It is a bad day to die.
We successfully made it halfway across the bridge and then Zayne said something that stopped us in our tracks, "Oh, please try not to fall because it's sure to be a boring and excruciating death....there is no bottom. The trench goes on forever. There are skeletons of past people still down their falling at this very minute! So please, take my kind advice and don't fall."
"And you say this like your a world class flight attendant going into a storm" July said, her voice wobbly.
Zayne chuckled and we kept our steady pace in pure silence."Don't worry, Alice were almost there," Jasper said, his voice soft and kind.
"That's great, I...." Alice's steady voice was cut short by her gut wrenching scream, we all stopped and watched in horror as Alice plummeted over the side of the bridge and down into the never ending trench.
