I woke up with my shirt soaked and my shoes soggy. I rubbed my tired eyes and frowned at the small waves crashing against the boat, rocking it like a cradle. Lets hope we don't need to escape on Alice's wings!I turned my head and smiled faintly at the group of my friends sleeping so carelessly together in a warm huddle, not thinking that maybe they might actually be pushed off the small boat. I shrugged to myself, lets just hope it won't happen like I said.
I snuck a long glance up at the star lit sky. Wow. This universe really was no different, but so exotically different form earth at the same time. I closed my eyes and lay back down, falling asleep to the soothing sound of the waves rocking the boat along and the sweet, comforting smell of sea salt and fresh freedom. Soon I was asleep again. No dreams. Just tired mind and sweet surroundings.
I woke up the next morning to a very bright sun. So bright I screamed because of the rays that shone in my crusty eyes, still dazed from their previous nights rest. Everyone else was awake to.
"Hey! We made it with out the boat tipping over!" Simon beamed. everyone began to celebrate this obvious fact that existed so largely in our mind.
"Yeah...but the foods gone" I gasped, digging my hand in the empty bag that once held a bounty of chanterelle mushrooms and sour grapes.
"Can't we fish?" Jasper suggested, rubbing his deep blue eyes and sparing a quick, hopeful glance at Alice.
"Yes! Fish! good idea!" Alice cried, raising her arm in support for Jaspers idea.
"Okay...but how?" I asked, raising one eyebrow.
"Bait!..oh wait " July sighed, "No food.."
Simon smiled softly,"I can speak to the fish...maybe they would be willing to take their lives for ours... "
I smiled at Simon. Things were getting different between us. I no longer felt caged an worried. I felt safe and taken care of.
"Were gonna die!!!" Alice screamed, tugging at her ratty mop of unruly bed head.
"Calm down Alice! Jeez....If we don't get any food, you can fly us somewhere with food! okay! how does that sound," I sighed.
Alice beamed,"Fine by me!"
"okay...Simon? " I smiled at this boy who can speak to animals, the one who we counted on to pursued a living creature to take it's life for us.
Simon nodded and leaned over the boat, whispering into the water. Me and July snuck a confused glance. nobody could hear what Simon was saying. Suddenly Simon turned towards me and asked for a knife. The old fish wished to be killed in the water, were it lived. I handed Simon my sharp knife. I leaned over the boat and gasped at the beautiful koi fish bobbing aimlessly in the water before us, It's deep grey eyes staring, unblinking at me. I swore I could see it's soul leave it's shimmering body as Simon sliced a deadly cut through the fish that ended it's life instantly. I began to cry as Simon handed the large fish to Jasper to gut and cook.
Simon put his arm around my hold and placed a warm finger on my cheek, wiping away the tears that did not fall from my face..just lingered there like an icicle frozen to a house. I looked up at his warm eyes.
"43 years and went peacefully in the ocean, " Simon whispered. That was all he said. but I knew as I ate the fish gratefully, that simon knows that fish wanted this.
And as I slept that second night on the water beside Simon's warm body, I remembered my past before This life. I'm so happy. A tear fell from my face as the night got chilly. But this was a tear that I would think of when I die. These memories will always linger. I glanced up once again at starry night sky and fell to sleep.
