Selene's New Moon

Chapter 16: I will protect you

After the door is closed, I am frozen in fear,  but Felix and Dwyer don't pause.  They are both purposely moving about the two rooms, packing up all their belongings.  There is no hesitation- they are a well oiled machine.  I am still motionless and staring at the door.  Are the others ok?  Is that  thing out there? 

  "Selene.  They will be fine.  They know what they are doing."  Once again, Dwyer's voice pulls me out of my spiraling darkness.    I look up into his face and search his eyes.  There is only confidence there. 

  "How about you give us a hand , ok cutie?"  I look back to the door.  I am wringing my hands.  A gentle hand comes up to grasp my chin.  My face is turned to look back into Dwyer's face.  Yes,  I need to move.  I am worried for Aiden, Kenji, and Owen, and I am worried for us.  But, I need to be a contributing member of the team right now.  Dwyer and Felix don't have time to hold my hand.  I try to straighten my spine and give Dwyer a somewhat shaky nod.   He smiles at me. 

  "Ok.  Can you get the things out of the bathroom?  Just put them in one of the bags here.  We will worry about what belongs to who later. "

  I nod my understanding and head to the bathroom.  I gather up toothbrushes and toothpaste.  There are some bottles of shampoo and body wash.  I gather it all up and stuff it in the bag Dwyer had indicated.   I quickly move the the bathroom in the adjoining room,  stealing a look at the door once more, but quickly move on.  I grab the stuff in the second bathroom and stuff that in the bag.   A strong hand grasps my shoulder and there is a gentle squeeze.

  "Good job darling,"  Felix says softly and then flashes me a smile as he zips up the bag. 
 
The door opens and I immediately whip around to see who is coming in.  Aiden stomps in with a scowl on his face and holds the door open as Owen and Kenji follow him.  The door is then firmly closed.  Felix and Dwyer both stop what they are doing and face the guys as well. 

  "We are moving out.  We need to take this fight to a less populated area.  We certainly have this demon's attention now. I'm going to check us out.  Get us out the door quickly gentlemen. "  Owen has issued the commands and is on his way out the door already. 

  My eyes latch onto Kenji "The demon was here while we were out?"

 "Yes.  It is kind of unusual for them to seek us out like this."  Kenji picks up a bag  and throws it over his shoulder.  He gracefully squats down to grab his lap top bag as well.

  I ring my hands together, "I thought they only came out at night?"

  "Oh, no.  It is true that the demons usually hunt at night, just because it is easier to go unnoticed.   It is easier for a person here and there to go missing at night. They look human,  just a little off.....  The sun doesn't hurt them or anything.  You are thinking of vampires."  Kenji sounds so matter of fact.  There is no fear in his voice- he could be discussing flavors of ice cream.

  I nod my understanding and grab one of the smaller bags to help the guys take them to the cars.  Once again I am amazed by how well the guys all work together.  In no time at all, we are all in the cars and ready to go.  Where we are going though, I have no clue...

  Kenji and I are sitting in the back seat again,  Dwyer is driving, and Aiden is in the front with him.   Our car is following behind Felix and Owen.

  "Where are we going?" I ask in a small voice.

  It is Aiden who answers, "We're headed back to the woods.  We don't want people calling the cops when we have to pull the guns out.  Plus, we know the demon has been there at least once, so it shouldn't take it long to find us. "
