Wyatt took hold on one of Lucy's hand, holding it so gently, as though she was fragile, she allowed him to make her get off the stool, sniffling, tears still rolling down her face. Wyatt reached for her face, thumb brushing away her salty tears as they glistened on her skin. A brief moment of silence between the two when Wyatt saw Lucy's face begin to crumble again and offered her his shoulder to cry on, rubbing her back, he felt like crying too. He didn't want to believe Rufus was gone, or that they were stuck in 1864, the thought made his stomach turn. But he wanted to be strong, he couldn't break down, not like he did when Jessica died. He had to be strong because now he had someone he had to be strong for. He held Lucy, feeling her shake as she cried.
Once she'd stopped crying she didn't pull out of the hug, she stayed, resting her head against Wyatt's chest rather than his shoulder, just wanting a moment where she was happy. Wyatt hadn't spoke a word, she knew why, she could sense him building up his shield to his emotions, slowing blocking out the grief. Yet he didn't seem to understand, that grief is inevitable, it can't be avoided. If you manage too, it destroys you slowly, breaking you down one by one.Someone cleared their throat, some man stood with his wife and their two children one girl about twelve and the boy looked around seven. Wyatt released Lucy, reaching for a tissue for her to dry her face. Lucy awkwardly smiled at the family as she dried her face, they didn't seem very amused.
"You match the description of the woman yelling there was a fire in our house, you evacuated an entire party." The man said, he stood lean and tall, a true image of a businessman. Lucy blushed.
"I'm her, yes. I'm so sorry there was a dangerous man here. But he...he got away, it wasn't safe having all those people around." Lucy told them, the man looked pretty strict but his face softened, reassuring Lucy and Wyatt that they weren't going to get thrown in a jail cell.
"Well then, if this is true, thank you. I shall let you leave, no police involved." The man stated, placing his top hat on his head, placing a hand on his sons shoulder and stepping aside, allowing Lucy and Wyatt a walk way out of the house.
"Thank you, sir." Lucy smiled, heading forward to the ajar front door, Wyatt close behind her, reaching the door and it slammed aggressively shut behind them, yet the family were quite a distance from the door, it seemed impossible for them to shut it that fast.
Wyatt walked side by side with Lucy, her eyes trained on the floor, her eyes now puffy, her face red and blotchy from crying. He could tell she was thinking of Rufus, wondering if he really was...gone. Wyatt kept up his hopes, Rufus was much smarter than the average pilot, he had faith that Rufus would be ok. Lucy sighed, lacing her arm through Wyatts walking swiftly back to their hotel. Letting the night consume them.
"I know the shillings are running low, but how about a drink?" Lucy muttered, looking up at Wyatt, Wyatt could barely make out her features anymore, the darkness blending with her brown hair and eyes, she was barely visible. He wished he could agreed, wished he could have a good old whiskey to take away his memories of their friend vanishing through time and never returning.
"I can't." He sighed, his tone wasn't annoyed, more sad, alone, dry. Lucy looked up at him with her big brown eyes, she could see the faint structure of his face, his electric blue eyes, still as bright as always yet behind them she felt she could sense the feeling of someone who'd gotten lost and couldn't find their way back. Lucy didn't hesitate but she stepped in front of him blocking his path and getting on her tiptoes, pressing a kiss to his lips. Resting her head on his after.
"You and me now remember?" She said her voice distant, yet so close. Wyatt nodded, his hand still cradling her jaw.
"You and me." He confirmed, closing his eyes for a brief second. Then resuming their walk back, hands entwined with one anothers. Listening to the noises of the city, barely any clip clopping of the horses, seem as most people had retreated to their homes for sleep. It was peaceful. Something that felt like it could last forever. But of course it couldn't.
In a centuries time, these homes will be knocked down, roads torn up, the only horses you'd hear were only from the police horses roaming the area with their riders. People rushing around, going to and from their jobs, arguments flying around everywhere. No silence, not even at night. So Wyatt treasured this moment they had in time, it was rare to have a quiet evening, especially one where you can see the stars in a clear sky. "It's beautiful.""Yeah, it is." Lucy agreed, looking up resting her shoulder against Wyatt's arm as they walked. The stars twinkling with life above them.
