Crook tried again. She closed her eyes and felt the heat leap from her feet to her hands. The heat got stronger and stronger until it was almost unbearable. She opened her eyes and looked at her hands. Fire leaped and cracked around her hands, then it faded. Crook held back a groan of frustration.
"Try again." The voice encouraged. Crook was beyond encouragement by now. Whenever she tried to see the fire on her hands it faded and she didn't know why.
"Ugh what am I doing wrong?" Crook closed her eyes again, then focused all of the heat to her hands. As soon as she could feel the tickle of flames she opened her eyes. This time they stayed. Crook was ecstatic. She clenched and unclenched her fists, getting used to the feeling of the fire, "Okay now what?"
"Does that hurt?" Crook whirled around to see Toby leaning against the painting door. She fell backwards in surprise, a look of astonishment on her face. As soon as her hands touched the ground embers mixed with char (you know when you turn a candle and the sides turn black?) shot out and colored the floor and walls with it.
"How did- what the- how much, did you, see?" Crook was panicking. In her mind she was picturing the look of horror on everyone's faces when they figured out she had these abilities.
"Only the cool hand fire thingy. Why'd you not tell anybody you could do that?" Toby took a step forward.
"Well I didn't know until a few weeks ago. I decided that I wouldn't tell anybody until I had full control over things. Or at least until Masky got back home." Crook searched Toby's face for fear but all she saw was curiosity. He sat down next to her.
"I know a thing or two about magical stuff kinda like what you did. There are whole families who base their lives on this kind of stuff. They use oracles and other stuff to predict the type of magic their next kid will have. Certain types of magic are considered 'light magic' like, Light, Water, Earth, Shape shifting, and Snow. Then there is the 'dark magic' like Darkness, Fire, Ability to summon demons, and my favorite Weather disasters." Toby chattered like this was just a regular conversation and not some life changing event.
"How do you know so much about magic?" Crook asked, now curious herself.
"Well Slender gave me this book and told me to read it, then burn it. So I did and I haven't forgotten a thing from it. Not even the copyright date, which was b.c 1300 by the way. Didn't even know they had copyright dates back then. But I think that was added later on as a joke. If it was it's pretty darn funny. I mean I guess so. What do you know about magic?"
"Only that my mother was afraid of me because of my power and that there was this prophecy thing that I'm going to turn the family towards the dark or something like that. You see that painting over there of the girl in a black cape?" Crook pointed to the painting of her.
"Yeah? What about it?" Toby squinted at it as if looking at something from far away.
"That's me when I'm eighteen."
"That's cool. But I got one question." Toby tilted his head side ways, his hair magically defying gravity and staying exactly how it was before, "Why is the operator symbol in the painting?"
"The what?" She looked at him like she looked at math problems longer than this sentence. Confusion.
"The operator symbol. It basically what us Proxies use to ward off hikers in the woods. Once there were these guys that were just hell bent on finding us. I mean not even the operator symbols scared them away! And then one day, I think it was around the tenth anneversary of 9/11, they took-" Toby suddenly stopped himself, "You know what forget I said that last part. Hey did you know that there could have been twenty terrorists on the planes that hit the places?"
"Let's not get started on depressing American history. I lost a couple cousins on that day. Ah heck I was freaking there. Imagine third grade me toddling around the North Tower when a plane hits the exact spot I'm standing! I don't even know how I survived!" Crook looked at her hands a sudden realization coming to her, "What if it was, because of this?"
"I'm pretty sure that's what it was. But hey I'm hungry you want to go over to the Subway a couple blocks down?" Toby got up, helped Crook up, then headed for the painting door.
"Toby," Crook's voice turned deadly serious, "You won't tell anyone about the fire ability right?"
"Cross my heart and hope to die. All though I'd really rather not die. But that's besides the point, you have my word. If anyone tells, it'll have to be you." Toby smiled and extended a hand towards Crook, "Now we must be going young master or lunch will get cold."
"All right 'Sebastian' let's go get the others. And when did you start watching Black Butler?" Crook laughed. It felt like a small weight had been lifted off her shoulders. Sure there was only half of the serum made, sure Masky was being held captive by her brother, sure Jane was constantly plotting their demise but none of it mattered at that point. Crook was no longer alone in her situation.
Now she had someone to trust.
Heyo! So I hoped you enjoyed that chapter!
So some quick news me and AllTehFandoms have created a joint account called FandomFriends. So far we only have a weird thing where me and Kylie live with the Black Butler characters and a fan fiction with Sebastian's little siblings.
So keep reading and hopefully the next chapter of Crook will be up soon!
Oh and while we're at it follow AllTehFandoms and if you feel like it FandomFriends.
