I couldn't think of a better chapter name so this is just part two. And it takes place a little after Clockwork leaves Crook.
I tugged on the chains again as the char covered the walls. The cuffs of the chains slipped off easily now that they'd heated up. I heard people at the door saying things like, "We'd better kill her quickly, she's dangerous." Fearing for my life, I sent a blast of fire at the wall. It toppled over with no resistance. Without thinking I ran into the thick smoke that billowed all around me. I ran until I saw a figure coming toward me. Clockwork.
"Crook! You can't run from this!" She shouted. I stopped running and turned around to face her.
"Just take care of Jeff." I blinked back tears, to think I'd never see him again.
"Jeff? He came back from the forest weak and cold! He said you burnt his heart!" Shouting was the only way to be heard against the roar of the flames, "I tried to safe him but it was too late. He was cold as ice, his hair turned white. Your boyfriend is dead. Because of you."
"No." I turned away clutching at my chest, "No!" I fell to the ground and put my head in my hands. The smoke evaporated and the roar stopped.
The next thing I knew there was a rush of wind and someone else shouting "NO!" At first I thought it was me, but then I looked up.
"Jeff!" I jumped up and came around to face the golden figure, "Jeff no. No. Please no.....Jeff!" I threw my arms around him and let silent tears fall down my face. What had I done? This was all my fault! Why had I let this happen?
"Jeff?" Ben's voice asked. My shoulders shook with silent sobs. Then all around me there were gasps. Of horror I was sure. Until the golden statue of my boyfriend moved. I looked up hopefully.
"Jeff?" Sure enough, it was him. I hugged him, like really hugged him. Something I hadn't done since Masky had been kidnapped, "You sacrificed yourself, for me?"
"I love you." He smiled. Ben danced around with a look on his face.
"An act of true love will tame a fire heart!" He sang. Then in dawned on me.
"Love! Duh of course! Love!" I stepped further into the clearing and close my eyes. I felt the fire all the way from the clearing to the far reaches of the cornfield. I raised one of my hands and drew it towards me. A few seconds later a warm hard ball formed in my hand. I opened my eyes. A gold ball about the size of a baseball had formed. A voice behind me nearly have me a heart attack.
"How did that much fire fit in that small of a ball?" I turned to see a boy a little taller than Jeff. He had black hair, grey skin, and glasses that seemed to glow on their own.
"What are trying to do? Get us all killed!?" A woman came behind him. She had blonde hair, fair skin, and exs where her eyes should be.
"Oh come on Curser, she seems peaceful enough." The boy shrugged, then winced. I noticed the almost completely red bandage on his shoulder.
"If you don't mind me asking, what happened to your shoulder?" I asked with a small smile.
"Uh we were attacked by a group of black eyed kids and Clockwork." He answered as if it were something he'd explained fifty million times.
"Clockwork? Why-" I began.
"I'll tell you why. Because I'm sick of hiding!" Clockwork rushed at me. I sidestepped just before she would've stabbed me in the heart. Luckily she missed me completely.
"Jenn run!" Jeff shouted.
"Running in this not really my fortè!" I shouted back but began to run. When I was behind a large enough tree, I shot a blast of fire at my still barefoot feet. Black sandals formed as the dress began to disappear. What replaced it was like a black unitard but had short sleeves and shorts. I formed a gold sword and charged back out.
"Well somebody can't stay away from a fight!" The boy I was talking to earlier grinned.
"Sorry. Kinda in my blood. By the way," I blocked a lunge from Clockwork, "I never caught your name!"
"It's Observer!" He jumped back from a black eyed kid that had come from no where.
"Jeff!" I looked over at him, "See if you can find the others!"
"Yes ma'am!" He saluted and ran off. The people we had were Observer, Curser, Ben, Masky, Toby, and a guy I'd later learn to be Firebrand. Oh yeah and me. Can't forget myself now can I? I put my braid up into a bun to keep it out of the way. While I dodged and parried Clockwork's attacks the others had formed a sort of circle around us. It kept the black eyed kids from interfering so that was a bit of a plus. I was certain that this battle would be won.
That was until the demons arrived. I hadn't seen them since the first time I'd met Jane. Which had been a little over nine months ago. I'd forgotten how tall they were, and how strong. I had to attack both Clockwork AND a black eyed demon. I was screwed. Deciding I needed it's advice I pulled out the enchanted dagger. It said, IT IS HER HEART I CRAVE.
"Okay...." I breathed. I glanced at Toby, who glanced at the dagger and nodded with an almost imperceptible nod. With a wild yell I charged Clockwork for once. She was too caught off guard to react quickly enough. I thrust the dagger in her heart. Clockwork coughed up blood, some of which landed on my cheek. I wiped it off with a finger, and licked it off. It had been such a long time since I'd killed. I'd almost forgotten the metallic taste of blood. Toby came up to Clockwork, who was writhing on the ground. She looked up at him with tear filled eyes.
"I didn't want to hurt you...." Then she died.
"I know." Then Toby disappeared.
"Hey guys I'm back and holy crap!" Jeff glanced over my shoulder at Clockwork's corpse, "Good job."
"Wait. Your happy?" I asked as if I wasn't already pleased with myself.
"She locked me in a room to die an hour ago. I'm pretty sure I'm happy." Jeff hugged me and I hugged him back. All the black eyes kids had dispersed and the demons gone.
