Chapter 16

~Fleur~

Papers and files were piling up on Mich’s desk, ready to be copied and printed. I frowned as Mich got up and started cleaning our table. I took her hand and she looked at me with a confused look. I gave her a smile and took the plates from her hand. “I’ll clean up, you can get back to the papers now. It looks like you have lots of work to finish.” I told her and she sent me an appreciative look as I got out from her printing room with the our plates in my hand.

Lunch hour was over and many of the office workers had went back to finishing their job. Some were already typing away on their computers so I quickly walked over to the office kitchen as quietly as possible.

I was squeezing the soap onto the dishes when I heard a cough that made me jumped slightly. I acted on instinct and turned around, finding Will coughing behind me while leaning against the counter. Then the conversation between Mich and I back at the printing room came to my mind and I started to think what Will was hiding from me again. My grip on the dish I was holding, tightened and I stared at Will, trying to figure out.

“What?” Will gave me a questioning look and a cough escaped his lips again.

“Nothing. It’s just that...why didn’t you tell me there was a retreat going on tomorrow?” I confronted him, momentarily forgetting that I left the water running and the dish was still in my hand. Will dropped the coughing act and crossed his arms. Soon, the both of us were in a staring competition and I won. Like always.

“I have my reasons.” He simply replied me and shrugged. Before I could ask another question, he disappeared from the office and probably went back to his office. Trying to avoid the question, obviously. My frown deepened and focused on washing the dishes. Mich left a few stains on her plate so I had to the little brush to scrape it off.

~Mich~

Print, print, print. That was my routine for almost every day since I worked for that cousin of mine. If it wasn’t because I needed a place to stay and some cash to survive, I wouldn’t have worked for him anyways. But Mom went psycho and spent all of dad’s money just to hire those lunatics to work for her. I never liked her, even though she was my mom. Will took care of me better than she ever did.

Before Will even made himself responsible for me, dad was the one who took care both Lance and I. Dad was the one who enrolled me to school and the one who bought me nice clothes. The only thing my mom ever did for me was giving birth to me. She never loved my dad either, she kept muttering ‘Cameron’ over and over and over. It surprised me that dad never left her even after she had feelings for another man. Dad told me that he loved mom no matter who she had feelings for. Sometimes I pity my dad.

When dad got killed by Lance’s ex-girlfriend, I got into depression and the only person who comforted me was Will. Lance was like my mom, he never cared. Will was the one who bought me food and clothes, the one who supplied me with money for school and most of all, love. My cousin, out of all people, gave me family love and that was enough for me to go on without losing my patience and snap at my own family.

When my brother went to jail, I found out about everything that happened between Will and my brother. It was the most terrible story I’d heard and the most depressing thing that my cousin had to face. When Will moved to New York to take over his father’s company, I followed him and he let me stay at his penthouse too. That was something cool, coming from a cousin who was a guy.

The desk vibrated a bit and I heard Flower’s stupid high-pitched voice coming from the little intercom. “Hey Mich!” she said and I rolled my eyes. She couldn’t see me anyways. “There’s someone here to see you! It’s a guy by the way!” I rolled my eyes again.

Without giving her a single reply, I tossed my blonde hair over my shoulder and strode out of the main office to the elevator. When I arrived the lobby, Flower was sitting behind her little desk, grinning at me. It took all my willpower to not roll my eyes. Mom paid Flower to act like the little good girl she was supposed to be and I wasn’t going to fall for that.

“Hey Mich!” How many times do you need to say ‘Hey Mich!’ to me?! “Someone named Lance Cross is here to see you!” I tensed up. Lance Cross? As in my brother, Lance Cross? My eyes roamed around the waiting room and found my brother, sitting there, smiling like he was innocent.

“Hello, Michi.” His voice, dangerous and low.

I had to warn my cousin.

~Max~

“Max!” I heard Liv’s high-pitched voice screamed my name while I was cooking a dish. The kitchen doors slammed open and Liv strode in without even glancing at the other workers in the kitchen. Little beads of sweat formed on her forehead and she looked like she was about to snap.

“Max, I-“ she started, but dad cut her off.

“Liv, if you expect to keep your job, get out there and handle the customers. Not talking to my son.” My dad’s voice was stern. Liv growled at him and took out a notepad and a pen from her pocket.

She started scribbling something on her paper and gave it to me before stomping out of the kitchen, leaving my dad amused. I glanced at the paper and tried to read what Liv wrote. Since Liv wrote in such a hurry, the hand writing was a bit messy.

Mich texted. Lance out of jail. Lance after Will and Fleur. Call them. Mich can’t. Trapped by Lance.

When my dad was out of sight, I took out my cell phone and immediately calling my best friend.

~Fleur~

I was stacking Will’s files together when my cell phone started vibrating in my office skirt. I raised an eyebrow and glanced at the screen. Max’s name was flashing on the screen and I hesitated before answering.

     “Hello?”

“Fleur, Lance is at your building. Mich couldn’t call you to warn you. Both you and Will have to get out of there right now!” Max warned. Will, from his desk, saw the panic in my eyes and quickly got up.

“What’s wrong?” He asked when I hung up on Max.

“Max called, he said Lance is in the building. And that Mich couldn’t call to warn us because Lance is around her.” I said everything in one quick breath. His eyes widened and he quickly grabbed my arm before pulling me to the emergency stairs. I was careful to not let myself trip, since I was wearing high heels. My phone vibrated again and I glanced at it again. Mich had sent me a text. I quickly opened it and read it.

     He’s coming up the elevator.

That calmed me down a bit. If Lance was going up, it was probably a good thing Will and I were going down. “Where are we going?” I asked Will and he seemed to think about it while we ran. Somehow, I wish I could throw away my shoes.

“Max. We need to think why Lance is out of jail.”
