And the court remained ours.
It took some time before Nekoma began starting to catch up, morphing into a team that could almost match our skills once they had seen first hand what our skills were like. The speed seemed easiest for them to grow comfortable with, but our mix of abilities was a puzzle to difficult to figure out within one game.
I spiked many times during the game, but was traded out a few times once I reached the back considering receiving wasn't my strongest attribute and we needed to give some of our younger teammates a chance to train. Jiro allowed this, only because he never put in words on how to play the game. It was almost as if he didn't even care what we did, as long as we were rude to the other team and played till our arms fell off.
There were some enjoyable moments during this game, such as the scene was when our star server, Haruka, served her screwball again at one point in the game and messed up Nekoma so badly we got six points ahead before they finally broke it off. When that happened though, Jiro got so steamed he forced us to snatch Haruka out of the game, and we didn't see her on the court again for the rest of the match.
In the end, we left Nekoma in the dust with a score of 25 to 16. As we lined up for the traditional handshake, it was clear to see how aggravated they are just by their iron strong grip and accusing eyes. Their attitudes didn't seem to make my team's growing nerves any better.
"Another great game, as usual." Mika compliments as we head off the court for a group huddle, trying to lighten the mood while Jiro stepped away to use the bathroom for probably the millionth time. Stupid old man. "I'll show you all the pictures I took when we get back to the dorm."
"I hope you got my good side, because I was killing it out there!" Ren jokes, pretending to spike a ball in the air, causing a small ripple of laughter to spread through the girls as they enjoy a few seconds without Jiro trying to suck every bit of fun from our lives.
There was suddenly a camera shoved into the center of the group as Kiyomi attempted to capture our end game expressions. "Well, there you have it Katsushika! First day of the training camp and the wolves have officially dominated the court." Her voice was almost drowned out by our loud howls to follow, putting on brave faces for the camera. "Remember to keep watching for the next game, and then again tonight when we conduct our regular Q & A's to see what our players have to say!"
After a quick wave to the screen, she cuts the film and we were able to relax for a second out of the view of the lense. Taking my chance in this break, I drift to the back of the group where I was able to find the team's first years as they still tried to handle their rushing adrenaline. "What did I tell you guys? Katsushika can handle anything."
They all share an excited glance between each other, even Kimie, who for once wasn't hovering in a corner. She still seemed a bit dazed though, barely taking her eyes off her still tingling hands after getting a chance to practice some sets on the court again. I decided to give her a bit of attention while the others were distracted. "Having fun out there, Pup?" I asked, leaning in closer so she could hear. "I could get use to having you as my setter more often."
Her eyes flashed a hint of excitement for a fraction of a second before she attempted to hide it with her jet black bangs. "Thank you... Alpha." Was what she muttered before turning away again. I could tell that she really had a love for this sport, she just needed a bit more practice until she could become comfortable showing it.
I give her a strong slap on the back before acknowledging the group as a whole again. "Grab some water and meet back on the court in five! We have another game to play!"
"Yes, Alpha!" They all reply before filing over to the coolers.
It was just me standing at the edge of the net then, watching over as the girls began grabbing bottles from the icebox and passing them between each other to make sure each team member got a drink. When it came to Katsushika, half of the bottles contents went inside our bodies but the other half was used for splashing into each others faces to keep refreshed, creating a giant puddle on the floor.
