By the time morning came, all of the storm clouds that darkened the city the night before had disappeared from the sky, leaving nothing but wet puddles along the ground and a memory that I don't think any of us will forget anytime soon.
After Shinobu and I's emotional makeup at the train station, which nobody has let us live down yet, we went back to the dorms for a chance of clothes and ended up going back to the sushi bar down the street from the school, where I practically ate them out of house and home. I think it's safe to say that my appetite is back, and maybe even stronger than ever.
I can't even remember how long we stayed there, all I know is that my eyelids were so heavy by the time we left that I was tempted to hold them open with toothpicks. As soon as my face hit the pillow, I was out like a light, stomach full and, for the first time in weeks, nothing troubling my mind. Probably the best sleep I've had in a while.
That is until I am given a rude awakening by Shinobu smacking me in the face with a pillow, sending me sprawling all over the floor and almost choking on my own drool.
"Damn it, Shinobu, what was that for?"
"You're lucky you woke up when you did, Nakeyama! I was tempted to smother you with this pillow if you didn't stop snoring!"
"I do not snore!"
"Like hell you don't! I thought a helicopter was landing on the roof!"
Our yelling acts as an alarm clock to our two younger teammates, and I hear a tiny whine as Miyu lifts her sleepy head from her floor mat, hair in such tangles she begins to resemble her older sister. Kimie doesn't even bother sitting up, I just hear her let out a groggy groan before rolling over under her blanket and shoving her head under her pillow.
Well, that's one way to start the morning. After I dodge a few more pillows thrown at me by Shinobu, we work together to drag Kimie out of bed while Miyu staggers around the room half asleep to get dressed. We had laid out most of our clothes by the window the night before so that they could air dry, and thankfully most of them are good as new.
Finally, after brushing through our tangled hair, wiping the stale drool off of our faces, and getting into our Katsushika practice clothes, we make our way out of the dorms and out into the bright Nekoma High courtyard, the gym just a couple of strides away.
We don't even get to the door before we hear a commotion inside, but it's not warm up practice like we had originally expected to hear. Once we get closer, I am able to recognize coach Nekomata's voice echoing around the gym, and from the sound of it, he isn't happy.
My suspicions are confirmed as soon as we step through the door, catching him mid sentence while in a huddle with his team. "I had almost the whole block calling me last night to tell me that half of my team is running wild around the town... in the middle of a storm!" He scolds, his attention coincidentally turned to the five boys who were with us the night before.
Until now, I never put my thought to what the boy's coach would think to them being out so late with us, but I guess I'm getting my answer right now. Me and my teammates remain standing by the doorway as they continue, not wanting to interrupt a Nekoma team meeting, especially if we know that our inclusion will only make it worse.
Watching from afar, I see the boy's heads look down to the ground ashamed, avoiding the angry gaze of their coach. "We're sorry sir," Yaku apologizes, giving a respectful bow before beginning to argue his case. "but we never would have done it if we didn't have to. It was an emergency!"
"An emergency?" Nekomata echoes, raising an eyebrow while his arms cross firmly over his chest. "What excuse can you boys have for running around like stray cats in the rain in the dead of night? You could've been hurt, or worse!"
