For most students in Japan, summer is a time of relaxation and rejuvenation. It's when they have the chance to turn off their minds and kick up their feet to enjoy a well earned break before the hard work begins again. It's a time to be with friends, to relax in the warmth of the sun on a sandy beach, or sit outside of a small cafe in the center of town and watch people pass along the sidewalk.
For most, this is a time to have fun with no worries or stress, but this year, that is not the case for Katsushika...
The sun beats down on the rural mountain district as the Nekoma bus drives through the school's hometown, and even on a blazing afternoon in late July, the streets buzz with activity as everyone continues to prepare for the Full Moon games that are only two weeks away.
All through the town, bright sapphire blue decorations cover every inch of the roadsides, from store windows to lampposts, and there is an explosion of excitement within the bus as the boys crowd around every open window to admire the Katsushika pride.
Kuroo's vision is flooded with a sea of blue as he watches the scenery pass before him, his mind only half focused on the present while the rest wanders to the future when they are finally reunited with the girls. It's been over two months since the teams have seen each other in person, but the girl's schedules have been so flooded with practice to prepare for their battle with Sukāretto that they've barely left the gym the whole summer.
Still, him and Akiraa have found time to video chat in between the madness, but he only becomes more anxious when he remembers just how drained Akiraa began to appear the longer the summer went on. Clearly, the work is taking a toll on her, but unlike when Jiro would work the girls to death against their will, this is something they all agreed on together. The girls want to win, and they're prepared to work hard to do it.
Kuroo knows he isn't the only one to be affected by the time apart. Beside him, he can hear the music of Kenma's game playing from his handheld, along with the annoying frantic tapping of his friend's foot against the bus floor, just a symptom of his clearly agitated mind.
Kenma hasn't been able to see Miyu again since the night they went to Tokyo with Kuroo and Akiraa, but since then they have talked to each other via video chat every day without fail. However, a screen is nowhere near the real thing, but at least now Kenma understand why Kuroo is always bursting at the seams with excitement before his dates with Akiraa.
Sighs of disappointment suddenly erupts throughout the rest of the Nekoma team as the bus makes a turn down a side road, replacing the bright blue streets of town with a canopy of green stretching overhead, tiny beams of sunlight dripping in between the leaves rustling in the warm summer breeze.
Both Kuroo's and Kenma's heads perk up when the gate of the Katsushika campus comes into view through the foliage, and their hearts are already close to bursting from their chests by the time they pass the shining silver wolf statutes on the sides of the road.
