"Kuroo, look! Taiyaki!" I exclaimed excitedly, tightening my grip on his hand before taking off down the sidewalk to where I could already smell the cakes being made. "I haven't had these in years!"
"You really don't get full, do you?" I heard him chuckle over the chatter of people around us, his body limp as he just allows me to drag him around the streets of the city.
I didn't even bother with a scoff as I make it to the stand of food, my mouth already dripping with slobber from the crisp, golden fish-shaped waffle treats laid out before me. "You seen the mess I had to deal with earlier today." I huff over my shoulder. "I'd rather have overeating kill me than the stress of being a damn captain!"
He shuts humorously shakes his head as I turn back to the snacks, looking over all of my options. Of course, my stomach instantly pointed me to the chocolate filled taiyaki, and I ended up buying three, two being gone before we even make it down the street.
As we walked, Kuroo munched on his own cake filled with red bean paste while I worked on finishing my last, chocolate probably smudged all over my mouth. He surely kept his promise from this morning about making up for all the lost attention, his arm finding a place around my waist in seconds and pulling me close to where our sides were pressed warmly together with our paces becoming in sync with each other's.
"So what were you telling me before we left the bar?" He asked referring to our previous conversation before I got distracted by sampling all of the street food. "Something about the lacrosse captain?"
I was mid-bite into my taiyaki when he turned to meet my gaze, and my blood instantly starting to boil again at just the mention of the topic. "Oh, right!" I hissed under my breath, squaring my body up for another rant. "He was the one who almost suggested we talk to Sukāretto to see if we could get the date pushed back and we ended up tackling him before he could get the words out. I mean, does he not understand how humiliating that could be?"
Kuroo then gives me a confused glance. "But wouldn't pushing the date back a bit mean less stress on you guys? Sounds like a good idea to me."
"But it would also mean looking weak in front of those stupid blood-sucking night rats!" I argued, tearing off another bite of taiyaki. "A lot of the captains think that Sukāretto had the date moved up on purpose just to throw us off, but it's not gonna happen! These will be the greatest games ever played if we have anything to say about it!"
Without even noticing, my voice had risen to a bold shout, catching the attention of many passing strangers as we walked. Thankfully, Kuroo seemed to find my enthusiasm amusing, and he just gives a small laugh while hugging me closer to his body. "I can't even begin to imagine what these games are going to be like. You talk like it's a battle to the death."
I felt a heavy feeling settle within my chest at his last addition, those words echoing within my head as I felt my smile begin to falter. "Well... technically it is. Atleast, for us fourth years. This will be out last chance at these games, our last chance to win!"
We may have an extra year at Katsushika, this being done since so much of our time is fixed on sports that we need more time to achieve the academic levels before graduating, but it doesn't make our last year any less harder. "I just want to give my teammates something to really be proud of... something that can make up for those awful six months when..."
