"AKIRAA~!!!"
The panicked screech was almost too familiar to mistake, but before I could even process what was going on around me, I feel hands around my waist as I am suddenly pulled right out of the air. Unable to find balance on the ground, both me and the unknown body land hard on our sides as everyone else just stands baffled around us.
The ball, which was left untouched midair, falls back down to the floor with a few bounces by my head as if taunting me, but my focus was more on the person now holding me to the ground. I was able to recognize the thin head of hair and sapphire blue basketball jersey anywhere...
"Masao?!" I groaned, heaving myself upwards to where I was leaning on my elbows while trying to kick my friend off enough so I could lift my head. "What the hell was that all about?"
Judging by how hard he was breathing, it seemed as if he just ran a whole 5k before coming here, and he didn't make it any easier to understand his words as he begins screaming gibberish. "We're screwed!" He forces out of his mouth between gasps for air. "This is, by far, the worst thing that could ever happen to us! We are damned, screwed, everything you can think of-!"
"Whoa, whoa who! Slow down!" I interrupt, taking my hand and shoving his head backwards to finally get his weight off my body.
After I was finally able to sit up, I look to him again as he climbs to his knees. "I can't understand a thing you're saying! Why did you even run here anyways, I told you to message me on my walkie if you heard anything!"
"This is too important, I needed to talk to you in person!" He exclaims, finally able to make out whole sentences again without half of his words getting cut off from heavy breathing. I knew the look in his eyes right now, a mix of excitement, panic, and adrenaline. This peaked my interests greatly.
Before I could ask, I felt my body suddenly being pulled forward as he takes my shoulder and brings my face only inches from his, our gazes locking together while he mutters these next words in a low tone so only I could hear. The seriousness of his voice is what told me everything. "Akiraa, the moon has risen!" He whisper-shouts between his teeth. "I repeat, the moon has risen!"
Outsiders to Katsushika upon hearing this phrase would think that we were talking complete nonsense, even some of our newer students wouldn't understand, but us older kids new exactly what it meant anytime this phrase appeared. "You mean... the full moon?" I asked hesitantly, my heart jumping straight into my throat.
I felt my own adrenaline spike to unnatural levels when he gives a firm nod of his head, and I had to throw my hands over my mouth to keep from actually screaming from the sudden spike of energy. This caught the attention of everyone in the gym, and the girls all rush quickly over to see what was going on while the boys just followed behind them in blind confusion.
I wasn't even focused on the growing crowd as I fought to keep my own breathing under control. While processing the information, I noticed a few things didn't add up. "Wait, I don't understand..." I say, looking to Masao again. "Why are we hearing about this now? It's way too early, usually they tell us this in the middle of the school year!"
"That's what we all said when we heard it!" He exclaims, making everyone jump. "All the alphas are losing it right now, so they asked me to come to you for help. What do we do?"
"Oh for the love of god!" I hear Shinobu suddenly roar from behind us, rubbing her hands against her temple to get rid of the migraine that was probably already forming. "Can you guys just tell us what's going on already?! I'm getting tired of all this cryptic bullshit!"
"Can I please get back onto my feet first?" I snapped in her direction, the outburst finally bringing everyone around me to silence as I begin heaving myself upright again. Once I was up, my hand then extends to Masao to lift him off of his back so we could face our eager watchers.
