05: Taken
Dr. Wright and Davie walked through the streets just southwest of North Campus enjoying the buzz of the town while Nolan filled Davie in on some of the history of the university and his personal history. It was just past 11:00am and the heat was finally beginning to give way to cooler days. It would reach the low 80s and feel like Fall in New Orleans.
For the most part doctor Wright right dominated the one sided conversation. He asked Davie a few finite questions that she could answer easily and she responded slowly, carefully forming the words with her mouth. On only a few occasions did she need to engage her phone app.
"So, after I finished my PhD at Johns Hopkins I spent some time in the private clinical field but I found that I missed academia. Edward hired me three years ago and I've fallen in love with the city."
Davie grinned and nodded thinking to herself that she hoped she too would fall in love with the city. Her thoughts drifted to Vineeta whom she had missed in the last couple days sharing only in brief texts. Davie kept telling herself that she just had to make it through the Vineeta's defense.
"Davie, are you finding the time to get out and enjoy the city?" Nolan grinned and raised an eyebrow revealing his poorly veiled interest.
Davie pondered and then engaged her app smiling and shrugging. "Mmmmmm. I'm a workaholic Nolan and I've been working pretty closely now with my first cohort. So I guess the short answer is 'no' not as much as I'd like."
"Oh well, anytime you'd like someone to explore the city with you, call me. Please!"
Davie nodded and mouthed, "Will do Nolan."
Nolan slowed his gate, "Here we go! The best pralines in the city. And the ice cream is pretty spectacular too." Davie looked up and saw the front window for Cane and Cream and grinned ready to try her first praline.
----
Crossing over the threshold Davie sighed at the relief of the air conditioned space. She was surprised by the pretty significant line. It seemed like the shop was quite popular with both students and locals. Davie and Nolan moved to the back of the line where they looked over the various photos as the line moved at a slow pace.
Nolan commented lightly on what he saw and Davie occasionally nodded in acknowledgement and agreement. Davie tapped Nolan gently on the forearm and pointed to a Fontaine family photo from the late 1800s and mouthed slowly,"Wow! Beautiful photos!"
Nolan laughed lightly. "Yes Dr. Kaplan, I agree! This family has been in the area as long as pralines have. The family is quite beautiful."
"Well, merci beaucoup mes amies (thank you very much friends)!" Delia grinned with pride.
Davie's eyes widened slightly at the comforting sound of the woman's voice and her beauty. She grinned, sharing vicariously in her moment of joy.
Delia met Davie's eyes and she gasped lightly looking over the woman. Davie's hair was down her soft blonde streaking highlights creating depth and rich color. Davie's light brown eyes were confident and thoughtful and her fair skin was gently kissed by the sun. "You are quite beautiful too Cher!"
Davie mouthed,"Thank you" and moved forward in the line.
Delia balked, surprised by the response. Her eyes followed Davie for just a moment before she turned her attention to Nolan.
"Good afternoon!" Nolan smiled, also drawn in by Delia. He glanced over to Davie,"May I Dr. Kaplan?"
Davie smiled and mouthed, "Mm-Hmm. Please!"
