09: Speak

Davis sat at her desk staring at her computer screen. In the past 2 weeks she threw herself into her work but with the Thanksgiving break just 2 weeks away her thoughts drifted to Vineeta again. They had not spoken and texting felt awkward and ingenuine.

Neither of them had brought up the previously planned visit over break and Davie felt tears threatening knowing that the relationship had receded completely from her life. Her heart was broken and nothing in her world seemed right, but more than anything else Davie felt lonely. It was crippling.

Davie had not texted or heard from Nell either. She felt very much like she was in the 'driver's seat' in their "relationship" and she was grateful that Nell gave her that distance. When she thought of Nell she washed with a complex mix of need and guilt. Even though Davie's loneliness remained and she felt like she might need a good friend, she could not bring herself to contact Nell again. Their sex felt hollow. She knew the woman was a kind and beautiful person but she struggled to see beauty in anything.

She felt intense guilt in not being able to appreciate Nell. The immediate release of the sex was not worth the emotional toll. In the days following her time with Nell, Davie cried herself to sleep.

Davie rocked back in her chair and checked the clock on her computer screen. 8:05 Her mom and dad were still at work. She pulled her phone out to send her mom a quick text. Last time they talked online Davie had to work to convince her parents that she was okay. Since then she texted every couple days during work hours. She was afraid if they saw her on a screen she wouldn't be able to diminish her sorrow and they would worry.

"know you're working"
"Love you"
"doing great"
"heading out"

Davie grimaced to herself. It wasn't a complete lie, she was heading out from the office to home. Davie's stomach growled and she sighed, pulling herself from her chair and preparing to leave for the evening.

Delia watched Mirabelle carefully, Mirabelle was unusually moody recently. Delia could see her daughter was suffering and the length of time that she seemed to be unsettled was what concerned Delia. She moved through the day in a fog and was even more withdrawn than usual.

Delia spoke with Francois and she knew that Belle's last visit to his bar was challenging for Belle. Delia tried not to give Belle too hard a time about her social decisions but she sometimes really disliked her daughter being exposed to the minds of bar clientele.

"Belle, Cher. Why don't you head home early? I can finish up here. You can go 'watch Netflix.'" Delia smirked and pulled out the air quotes.

Mirabelle rolled her eyes and she sighed, "Mama, I really have been watching Netflix lately."

"Well good Cher! Do you want to come over and watch at the house? Your Papa will be home tomorrow. He'll be home through Thanksgiving."

Mirabelle stopped moving and contemplated for a moment. "Actually, Mama, that sounds like a great plan. I miss Daddy."

Delia's chest tightened at Belle's use of the word "Daddy" and the absence of French in her words. It was usually an indicator that Belle was sad.

Davie walked back toward her house on Maple. She meandered through the streets. Coffee shops and restaurants were still humming with students preparing for their pre-break exams and deadlines. Davis was hungry but she just kept moving, lost in unfocused thought and unwilling to stop long enough to make a decision.

Davie heard the chatter of a group of students moving along the sidewalk dominating the space. She looked up and shifted as far over to the right as she could and the kids broke around her like a wave. Davie held her ground and watched them move past her, she realized they carried ice cream in their hands. Once they cleared, Davie looked down the block and saw a familiar store front. She checked her phone, 8:57.
