23: Beg - Want
Davie stood in the water letting the heat relax her muscles. She felt good, her happiness returning like an old friend, familiar and wonderful. Her mind tumbled with possibility and hope. When she made it out into the kitchen, she found Belle at the table scrolling through her phone.
"Hello Cher! Feeling better?"
"Feeling so good." Davie checked the microwave clock. "I need to go soon. Work tomorrow."
Mirabelle sighed,"You could stay Cher, if you like." Belle wiggled her eyebrows again. "I'll keep you warm. I wouldn't let you sleep in."
"Yes, warm." Davie grinned, "And I'm sure you wouldn't let me sleep in. I've got a crazy week ahead. Exams and back to Seattle."
Mirabelle blinked, surprised and unsettled by the news. "Seattle?"
Davie nodded,"I'm going to visit family and for a graduation ceremony. Four or five days."
Belle grimaced,"Oh, that seems like a long time."
Davie moved to Belle. She leaned down and spoke slowly. "I'll be back." Davie slipped her hand to the back of Belle's neck, and pressed her lips to Belle's cheek, then by her ear, then gently into her neck.
"Jesus, Davie."
----
Davie walked home through the college town. She looked down at her phone reading and rereading the texts from Nell.
"dr kaplan"
"work session this week?"
Davie considered Nell and how she might redefine the relationship. While she was walking her phone chimed with a text from Vineeta.
"Hey"
"miss you"
"grad ceremony next sat"
"2pm"
"dr chopra!"
"wouldnt miss it"
"how are things?"
"everything ok?"
"Yes"
"walking home"
"Hahahahaha"
"grad student?"
"disney princess?"
"swipe right??"
"stop it!"
"Belle"
"whats grad plan?"
"parents coming in fri"
"out sun"
"dinner sat"
"ok?"
"you bet"
"ill get tix tonight"
"will send details so proud of you!"
"love you"
"love you too"
Davie smiled at her phone, she was enjoying the evolution of their relationship and found that she missed Vineeta and there was almost no tension and pain.
Davie flipped back over to the text from Nell and read it again. She was still pondering when she reached her house. Before she could work out how to respond to Nell her thoughts shifted to Belle. Her mind continued to volley thoughts of the two women all night.
Mercifully, once Davie laid down, sleep came quickly and she felt rested when she woke the next morning.
----
Davie made it into the office early but she found herself staring at her phone midmorning distracted by Nell's text. Davie sighed and replied.
"sorry i miss you yesterday"
"sunday dinner w/ belle"
Davie set her phone down and turned back to her work. She was a little nervous and half hoping that Nell wouldn't respond immediately.
