13: Complications

Mirabelle watched the two men move from the room. When she looked back to Davie she could see the woman's eyes inspecting her carefully. Belle shifted under the weight of her stare.

Davie moved her lips and signed immediately entrancing Belle. "So you 'help' Francois out at his bar?"

Belle stumbled through her response. "Well ... yes ... sometimes. It's complicated. Love is the unofficial bouncer, he thinks he knows more than he does. Always trying to help Francois with bar business."

Davie nodded, not quite convinced that Belle's response was entirely accurate. "What do you do?"

"Um, I basically sit there and keep an eye on the bar. Make sure things run smoothly. Kind of like an unofficial ... manager. Francois handles the drinks, I keep things running smoothly, Love takes out the trash."

Davie nodded, still not quite convinced.

"Um, Mama wanted me to walk down to the neighborhood market to get some lemons for the tea. Do you want to come?"

Davie continued her gaze,"Sure Belle."

The late afternoon sun felt good on the women. The temperatures held in the upper 60s and the walk was comfortable and refreshing. Belle and Davie moved at a steady pace in shared silence down to the small market. Each of the women seemed to sense in the other that there were significant things about each other that went unspoken and unknown.

"Here we go, Cher." Mirabelle nodded to the market door. The neighborhood store was a typical corner store offering mostly processed foods and snacks, beer, and cigarettes. The Lefort's lived in a small apartment above the store which was almost always open.

The store was well kept and clean and they had a small grocery section that the Fontaine's visited often when they were in a pinch and needed something quickly. Mirabelle and Davie crossed over the threshold and drew the attention of the woman behind the small counter and the two men meandering in chips and soda aisle.

"Hello Belle!"

Belle as a girl in her late teens, t-shirt, shorts, shy and reserved looking.

"Hello Mrs. Lefort! Just here for a couple of lemons."

"You're in luck! We have a few."

Davie smiled and followed Belle back where they found a small wicker basket with a mix of limes and lemons. There were about 7 lemons mixed in the basket. Belle grabbed a plastic bag. Davie started collecting.

Davie's lips moved, "How many Belle?"

Belle grinned,"Better get them all or we'll be walking back down here for sure. If we have some extras I'll make you some lemon-gin -basil sorbet."

Davie's eyes widened at the thought of the dessert. "Wow, that sounds incredible." Davie started loading the citrus in the bag.

The two men in the chip aisle glanced over the stock at the women. The creole girl was beautiful and obviously a local but the blonde was clearly out of her element.

The smaller of the two men spoke quietly to his friend,"What do you think Bobby?"

The broader man smirked at his friend "Sticks," his nickname derived from his scrawny legs. "Let's have some fun."
----

"Hello there ladies." The two men moved down the aisle toward the women. Sticks grinned but his smile didn't reach his eyes.
