18: Doghouse

Davie ended her week putting the finishing touches on her final exam and working in the lab with Teagan. By Saturday afternoon she was getting close to the "wall." She stopped by her house to drop off her bag, shower, and change into more comfortable clothes. As Davie moved from her house to Cane and Cream she pondered her evolving relationship with Nell and Belle's overture last week.

Every step Davie took she got a little more nervous. She hadn't really thought it through. She buried herself in her work over the week and then Nell sidetracked her. As she walked she considered Belle and her "sight" and found herself feeling unsettled. She wasn't sure if a visit to see Delia and Belle would help or make things worse.

When Davie crossed over the threshold and saw Belle and Delia working together behind the counter she immediately felt a transcendent peace and comfort. It felt like she was coming home and her uncertainty diminished to almost nothingness. She needed and wanted to be there.

Delia looked and saw Davie first. A smile broke across her face and joy seemed to emanate from the woman. "Hello Cher! Welcome back!" Davie saw relief on Delia's face and heard love in her voice.

Davie nodded,"Thank you Delia." She moved to find a seat toward the back of the shop. Mirabelle didn't say anything as she passed but Davie saw her smile softly and make eye contact.

For the next 20 minutes Davie took advantage, carefully observing the women. She had thousands of hours of practice in her labs and she slipped quickly into her academic mind. Davie realized as she watched the two women that there were things in their behavior and engagement that she had not recognized before.

People leaned toward Delia. They listened intently to her, their bodies relaxed, they smiled and sighed with contentment. Davie wondered about her drastic emotional change just a few moments ago. Delia almost always engaged with or spoke to the customers 1st.

She watched Belle's eyes and body language as she responded subtly to customers when they spoke to her. Davie thought she could see the woman occasionally tensing or laughing to herself. She again tried to recapture Belle's responses to Sticks, Dr. Wright, and Nell.

Davie felt the world shift beneath her as she witnessed the Fontaine legacy at work. She was seeing both the women in a new, intoxicating, and slightly disarming way.

Delia moved to sit with Davie while Belle finished with the last customers and locked up the store. She brought a small plate of pralines and coffee. Davie signed and spoke slowly.

"Delia, I'm so sorry. The way I left." Davie shook her head slightly. "It was childish."

Delia smiled softly, "Oh Cher, not to worry! The Fontaine's sometimes do that to people. You should have seen Charlie when he met my Great Aunt Camille. She gave people 'sight.'"

Confusion crossed over Davie's face, "'Gave?'"

Delia chuckled,"She could give someone a picture in their head and she gave Charlie an image of what might happen to him should he break my heart."

"Oh!" Davie blinked and as she considered that she broke into light laughter imagining the look on Charlie's face. "I'm sorry Delia, I'm still trying to get my head around it all." Davie checked for understanding and held up her phone.

"Oh no! I understand you Cher, just go slow! I like watching you sign and speak." Delia leaned in and whispered, "So does Belle."

Davie flushed,"Oh yes, that. She told me. I tried to create a little space this week." Before the women could continue their conversation Belle cut the front lights and moved back to join them.
